Local Cultures and Traditions

Mesoamerica is rich in local cultures and traditions. In spite of modernization, many indigenous communities have succeeded in preserving their identity and their ways.

Of all ancient cultures, the Maya is probably the most alive in all of Mesoamerica. There are currently about six million Mayan descendants, the most important of these reside in Mexico. The Yucatecs live on the warm and tropical Yucatán Peninsula, and the Tzotzil and Tzeltal live in the highlands of Chiapas. In addition, other large Maya groups include the Quiché and Cakchiquel Maya of Guatemala and the Kekchi Maya of Belize. Each of the 31 Maya groups throughout Central America speaks a different language, although all belong to the Mayan language family.

Apart from the famous Mayan civilization, Mesoamerica is rich with amazing local cultures. Olmec civilization was the earliest in the Americas and is well-known for its stunning colossal heads. Moreover, the Zapotecs ruled the area of Oaxaca, with the kingdom based in today’s Monte Albán site. Teotihuacan is a mysterious civilization which preceded the Mexica (or Aztec), whose vestiges can be seen in all of central Mexico. Finally, the Totonacs reigned the eastern area of the same country, with their base in El Tajín.

We created this section to include posts related to the amazing heritage and folklore of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. Let’s explore the biggest treasures of these beautiful countries!

Mexico’s psychedelic explorers

Local cultures have often used psychedelic plants since the first Mesoamerican Civilizations. There is clear evidence, such as the inscriptions of the archaeological temples. Moreover, some statues of gods honour this specific matter. Indigenous people consider these plants as a source of wisdom and healing. They only use them for specific purposes and under the guidance of a shaman or spiritual guide.
