Oaxaca is a unique place to experience the Day of the Dead (October 31 to November 2). It’s a time when family and friends come together to remember their dead loved ones through food, music, prayer and colourful altars. Both intriguing and unusual, the “Día de Muertos” festival is a celebration of ancestors as well as a huge party. Join us for an adventure that gives a truly different perspective of Mexico!
Markets
Mexican markets are always a jumble of colour, sight and sound. During the Day of the Dead, markets will be bursting with the orange colour of cempasúchil flowers and the purple of Celosia buds.
Fiesta
Oaxaca’s calendas are a type of street party that include massive puppets on stilts, dancers, music and fireworks. Throughout the holiday, street processions occur in various neighbourhoods of the city.
Cemeteries
One of the most important elements of Dia de Muertos is the tradition of decorating the family gravestone. Families bring flowers, light candles and even play the favourite music of their dead relatives.
