Guanajuato and the silver mines

Colonial architecture, cobbled streets and the unique subterraneous tunnel system make of Guanajuato a World Heritage Site.

La Valenciana Mine near Guanajuato City

Before getting into town, we will explore any of the silver mines surrounding the city that provided wealth to residents in the old times. Besides, our hotel is nearby Mercado Hidalgo, a great place to visit if you are hungry or want to see the locals going about their daily lives. There are plenty of regional handicrafts and the food stands can be delicious. Make sure you eat at a busy one even if it means waiting a while!

You’ll be able to freely explore Guanajuato in the afternoon. For this, we recommend any of the following activities:

Mummie Museum in Guanajuato City

Visit the Mummie Museum

On the outskirts of town lies a bizarre museum containing the mummies of residents. Anyone who can’t pay the fees for a plot is exhumed to make room for others, and some are put on display here. It might make some people feel uncomfortable, but it’s definitely interesting to see!

Aereal View of Guanajuato City

Climb to El Pipila statue above the town

This statue was built to honour the independence hero who burned down the gates of a Spanish fortress. It makes a great spot for photos, and you can watch the sun disappear behind the nearby mountains at sunset.

Diego riveras house in Guanajuato

Explore Diego Rivera’s House

Perhaps Guanajuato’s most famous son is the muralist Diego Rivera. His childhood home now houses a museum in his honour, as well as explanations of his most famous works.
