Northwest Mexico contains amazing natural wonders and rich ancient cultures. Our selection of places to visit in this area includes El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve, Guadalupe Canyon Oasis and Kino Bay.
El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar
One of Sonora’s most stunning natural wonders is the World Heritage Site of El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar. This biosphere reserve combines the largest sand dunes in North America with spectacular volcanic craters. Moreover, the Schuk Toak Museum offers a great explanation of Sonora desert’s history, its flora and fauna. Through our adventures, we spend two days camping under the stars and hiking around the craters and ever-shifting sand dunes.
Guadalupe canyon oasis
Guadalupe canyon oasis is nestled in the rugged mountains between northern Baja California and Sonora. This nature reserve counts with naturally heated water pools to relax, palm tree groves to hike around and amazing sunsets!
Kino Bay
Northwest Mexico also offers interesting coastal areas, such as Kino. This bay has some of the most beautiful beaches in Sonora. While our stay, we visit Punta Chueca, a small village home to the Seri indigenous tribe, who will show us their culture. Moreover, they will guide us on a tour through the nearby Tiburon Island. This ecological reserve is the largest island in Mexico, with 1,200 km2.
Basaseachi national park
Last but not least, we will hike around the Basaseachi national park. This protected area is home to the two largest waterfalls in Mexico. The Cascada Basaseachi has an amazing landscape and its easily accessible. From there, a local guide will assist us on a wonderful day trek to the waterfalls of Piedra Volada. These waterfalls are tricky to reach but are the tallest and most beautiful of Chihuahua. All in all, this hike is one of the most rewarding experiences in north Mexico!
