Key Information

Essential Prep & Info

Overlanding is your gateway to discovering hidden gems and making extraordinary connections in off-the-beaten-path destinations. It’s an adventure that calls for physical and mental readiness, flexibility, and an open mind.

As part of the adventure, expect some flexibility. Travelling through remote areas and navigating unpredictable border crossings may lead to adjustments in stops, accommodations, activities, and meals. Please note that the described driving hours are estimates and do not include time for activities, meals, or border crossings. They can also be affected by road closures or other unforeseen conditions.

Before booking, be sure to check out our Frequently Asked Questions Page, where we address possible scenarios you might encounter.

Getting There

Arrival and departure airport transfers are included* 🚐✈️

  • Recommended arrival airport: Tuxtla Gutiérrez / Ángel Albino Corzo Airport (TUX)
Tour begins / first night included: Chiapa de Corzo
  • Tour ends / last night included: Puerto Morelos
Recommended departure airport: Cancún International Airport (CUN)

Both airports are well connected, with frequent and usually very affordable flights.

* Transfers are included on the official arrival and departure dates only.

If you’d like to arrive earlier or stay on a bit longer, we’re happy to book pre- or post-tour accommodation for you. You can also just drop us a message, and we’ll let you know exactly which hotels we’re using for arrival and departure 😊

Food

Our wonderful hosts will provide most of your meals, except for a few sandwich lunches that we might prepare using our van equipment—a fun way to bond as a group! For the remaining meals, you’re free to explore on your own, follow our recommendations, or join our group meals. This flexibility allows you to experience the local cuisine at your own pace and budget.

We accommodate most dietary needs. However, please be aware that options might be limited during certain stops (like en-route lunch stops). For more details, check out our FAQ page.

Difficulty Rating

This trip is rated as Easy,

Your tour features a blend of activities and a few driving days. You’ll have some hikes, so a standard fitness level and adventurous spirit are important. While no prior experience is required, you should be comfortable with swimming and hiking. Expect to encounter heat and humidity, but you’ll also have opportunities to relax at comfortable hotels and scenic spots.

You’ll need to carry your bags in certain situations, such as from parking to the hotel, and be prepared to navigate stairs and high steps at archaeological sites and in the van.

Weather

South Mexico is a fantastic year-round destination, but the sweet spot for your trip is from November to May. This is when the weather is typically drier, cooler, and less humid, making it ideal for exploring. For the first bit of our tour, the Chiapanecan highlands offer pleasant hiking weather, with lows around 10°C and highs of 27°C.

This overlanding experience through Mexico was amazing!!

Jamie the guide is so full of energy and passion for this beautiful country. A well-thought-out route with a diverse variety of stays. So many highlights, that you will feel like you have been there for longer than 3 weeks, it’s packed full of wonder. I could not recommend a better way to travel to Mexico!

As a first-time overlander, I thoroughly enjoyed this tour!

The value for money is excellent, with at least one included activity daily, ensuring you make the most of your time in Mexico. It strikes a perfect balance, offering a blend of culture, breathtaking landscapes and interactions with locals. Highlights included: the Day of the Dead parades with face painting and visits to genuine places like La Ventanilla, complementing the iconic typical sites.

A great tour of Southern Mexico and celebrating the day of the dead festival is something that everyone should do. The itinerary was a good pace and made enjoyable with Jaime leading us.

From start to finish, the trip was outstanding

I recently returned from Lupita Overland’s “Wonders of Mexico” Trip.

Travelling in a specially outfitted custom van, we travelled from Mexico City to Tulum in 21 days. Lupita specializes in small group travel and they delivered an outstanding product. The quality of the driving was excellent. I always felt completely safe. I can’t imagine that any company could be better.

Jaime González is a fabulous leader. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was like the energizer bunny and attended to every detail of our trip. I had studied Spanish as a child, but I was completely unprepared for how important it would be to have a Spanish-speaking guide. We traveled well off the tourist trail and few people we encountered spoke English.

We swam in cenotes, sailed on the Lagoon in Balacar, dipped in waterfalls, and visited a number of difficult-to-reach Mayan ruins. There was something for everyone on the trip. Jaime was willing to accommodate all tastes. My husband and I opted out of camping entirely and took advantage of the hotel upgrades.

I cannot say enough about Lupita and Jaime. I fell in the airport en route to Mexico City and unexpectedly arrived in a wheelchair. Due to a knee injury, I could not participate in many of the activities. Jaime bent over backwards to make sure I was included and made special accommodations so I could continue with the tour. He was endlessly patient and kind. He never once made me feel that my injury was an inconvenience, even if it was.

I am a veteran of many overseas adventure travel trips across Africa and Asia. In more than two decades of travel, I have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to tours and tour leaders. I can count the outstanding tour leaders on one hand.

Jaime is the best of the best. He is top-notch. His attention to detail was outstanding. He brought his professionalism to every aspect of the trip.
