At 4:30 PM, we will gather for an essential Welcome Meeting to review the route and answer any questions. Right after, we’ll join the rest of the expedition crew (who are already on the road!) for a Welcome Dinner to celebrate the start of this epic Belize and Guatemala leg together. 🍽️✨
Today is all about the vibrant underwater world of Caye Caulker. We’ll kick off with an amazing snorkel tour to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where you can swim alongside nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and manatees amidst colourful coral formations. 🦈🐢🐚

You’ll learn the art of traditional drumming, move to the local beats with a dance session, and even try your hand at Garifuna cooking for a true taste of the village. 🥥🔥🕺
Our day begins with a visit to Belize’s Tropical Education Centre. This isn’t just a zoo; it’s a sanctuary for over 200 animals—including jaguars, tapirs, and tropical birds—that were orphaned or rescued. It’s the perfect introduction to the wildlife that makes Belize so unique. 🐾🐆

Set your alarms! Very early this morning, we venture deep into the emerald heart of the jungle to uncover Tikal, Guatemala’s most jaw-dropping Mayan site. As the rainforest wakes up to the sound of howler monkeys, you’ll explore towering temples that pierce the canopy and sprawling plazas where ancient kings once ruled. With our expert guide, you’ll dive into the history of this “City of Voices” and climb the pyramids for views that are truly out of this world. 🦜✨
After returning from the jungle, the afternoon is yours to recover and lean back into the lakeside pace. Stroll the colourful Malecón, take a refreshing dip in Lake Petén Itzá, or hop on a boat to Jorge’s Rope Swing for one last splash before the sun sets. 🌅🚤

Extend your adventure with extra nights in Antigua Guatemala, where you can embark on guided treks to the majestic Pacaya or Acatenango Volcano for an unforgettable finale. Please carefully read this article before making your decision on whether or not to do the Acatenango Trek.
If you’re looking for an active experience that is accessible to almost everyone, the Pacaya Volcano hike is the perfect choice. This guided trek is much shorter and less steep than Acatenango, winding through lush pine forests before opening up to a stark, otherworldly lunar landscape of dried lava fields. 🌑 While you won’t see rivers of flowing lava today, you’ll visit natural fumaroles (steam vents) where you can roast marshmallows over the volcanic rock! ☁️🔥
After the hike, we return to Antigua for a free afternoon. Use this time to explore the city’s hidden gems. ⛪🏙️

Embark on a thrilling 2-day trek to the majestic Acatenango Volcano! This challenging adventure takes you up to 4,000 meters, offering breathtaking views of the volcanic landscape and the erupting Volcán de Fuego. With a steep full-day hike of over 13 km, be prepared for a physically demanding journey (a minimum of 4 hours hiking up and 2 hours down, on difficult terrain), especially since nighttime temperatures can drop to around 0ºC.
We partner with trusted companies to ensure a safe and memorable trek. Make sure to pack appropriate gear or rent what you need before the tour starts (while these items can also be rented, we encourage you to bring at least a pair of good hiking boots):
Important Eco-Update: Local environmental authorities (CONAP) are currently restructuring accommodation guidelines at Acatenango to protect the volcanic ecosystem. Depending on local regulations at the time of our trek, overnight stays will be hosted either in eco-cabins or in high-quality, pre-set mountain tents. Don’t worry—all camping gear is fully provided and set up at the base camp; you won’t need to carry tents or heavy gear in your pack!
Get ready for an exhilarating adventure as we begin our climb! Early this morning, our guides will pick you up and drive to the trailhead. We’ll tackle the first leg of the ascent—a challenging 4 to 5-hour hike through changing microclimates until we reach our base camp perched on the mountainside. 🥾☁️
From camp, you’ll have a front-row seat to the eruptions of the neighbouring Volcán de Fuego. If you still have energy, you can opt for the extra hike to get even closer to Fuego’s active ridge. We’ll spend the night in basic cabins, resting up for our final push to the summit at dawn. 🌌🔥
Rise and shine for the final push! We’ll wake up in the pre-dawn darkness for a 1.5 to 2-hour hike to the summit of Acatenango. Reaching the peak at 4,000 meters just as the sun begins to rise is a truly life-changing experience. You’ll have panoramic views of the entire Guatemalan highland volcanic chain right in front of you. 📸🧡
After taking in the scenery and celebrating the summit, we’ll head back to base camp for a quick breakfast and to pack up. The descent back to the park entrance takes about 3 hours. We’ll return to Antigua in the early afternoon, giving you a well-deserved afternoon to rest, enjoy a hot shower, and explore the city at your own pace. ☕🏨
