Do I need to get involved?

On a Lupita Overland trip, you’re not just a passenger — you’re part of the crew. Expect to pitch in with small tasks like setting up camp, shopping, or cooking. This shared teamwork creates amazing bonds, epic stories, and a real sense of adventure. The more you get involved, the richer your journey becomes! 🌍⛺🍲

What language are your tours led in?

Our group tours are led in English — it’s the common language among our travellers.

For private tours, we’ve got you covered in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or even German (just give us a bit of notice 🇩🇪😉). Let us know your preference — we’re happy to adapt! 🌍🗣️

Can I join a group tour if I only speak basic English?

Yes, basic English is absolutely fine! 🌍💬 We frequently welcome travellers from all over the world who don’t speak perfectly but love to connect and share the adventure.

Just keep in mind that to maintain a great group dynamic, the entire trip runs strictly in English. Our crew leads all briefings in English, and we don’t offer double translations.

Out of respect for everyone on board, we ask that all conversations with the local guides stay in English so no one feels excluded. Let’s keep the van united! 👥❤️

I’m traveling solo – is that OK?

Absolutely! Most of our travellers join solo and leave with lifelong friends. 🌍✨ Our small-group trips are highly social, inclusive, and designed to make everyone feel part of the crew from day one. Solo, but never alone – that’s the Lupita vibe! 💛

By default, you’ll be matched with a fellow traveller of the same gender to share rooms or tents. If you prefer your own space, you can easily add a single supplement when booking! 🛏️

What kind of experiences are included in our tours?

Think less “tourist checklist” and more unforgettable adventure.

We mix iconic highlights with hidden gems, offering a blend of culture, nature, and fun. Expect things like hiking volcanoes, cooking in Mayan homes, sailing turquoise lagoons, exploring archaeological wonders, and spotting wildlife in the jungle. Most trips include around 75% guided activities, 20% of your time free to explore, and 5% optional add-ons — so there’s plenty of room to make the trip your own.

One of our key strengths is how we balance group dynamics with personal freedom. We make sure the activities everyone wants to do are included — with the best local providers — while also giving you free time where it matters most (like in colourful towns you’ll want to wander at your own pace). Unlike many companies, we don’t leave you stressing over what’s worth booking or who’s joining what — if it’s awesome, it’s already in!

Will I get enough free time?

Definitely! 🌿 All our tours are thoughtfully designed to strike a great balance between immersive group experiences and well-deserved free time. We know how important it is to wander at your own pace, soak in the vibe of a place, or just chill without a schedule 😌.

You’ll have free time at key points in the itinerary — especially in towns or areas that are perfect for exploring independently 🧭. That way, you can discover a cosy café ☕️, visit a museum 🎨, go shopping 🛍️, or just sit in the plaza and people-watch with a fresh juice.

We carefully plan activities so that everything worth doing together is already included — and we leave space to breathe where it matters most. No rushed checklists, no overcrowded days — just the right rhythm to enjoy the moment and make it your own 💫


 

Vehicle & Drive Days

What type of vehicle do you use?

On most group trips around Mexico, you’ll travel in Lupita, our custom-built 2020 Volkswagen Crafter minibus! 🚐 She comfortably carries up to 10 travellers, crew, and all our expedition gear into rugged areas where conventional tours cannot go. Consider her your home on the road—fully equipped with A/C, USB chargers, and a big fridge!

For private tours, larger groups, or journeys through Belize and Guatemala, we may use alternative quality rental vans or comfortable coaches, depending on group size and border restrictions. Additionally, on certain routes, we occasionally use trusted local transport (like public boats or regional shuttles) to reach specific remote highlights. 🚤

How much time is spent driving each day (and how often do we stop)?

Our trips are designed to maximise adventure, not road time! 🚐 Most driving days range from 2 to 5 hours, with just a few longer hauls (up to 8 hours max). But don’t worry — we break it up nicely and check out interesting spots along the way. After all… It’s not just about the destination, it’s about the ride too! Expect stops every 2–3 hours to stretch, grab snacks, and of course… take bathroom breaks. 🚻 Just be sure to hop back in once you’re ready — it helps keep the ride smooth and the good vibes rolling. 🌄🛣️

Can I keep the same seat in the van?

Sorry, but no — we rotate seats regularly so everyone gets a fair share of the best spots. The only exception is if someone’s feeling a bit carsick — then the front seat can be used temporarily.

You’re welcome to sit next to your favourite travel buddy, of course! And if you have a preference for one of the rear or less popular seats, feel free to ask the group — most people are happy to help keep things comfy. (Just don’t do this with the front seats 😉). What’s not allowed is “reserving” seats by leaving bags, clothes, or personal stuff on them. After every drive, all belongings must go into the overhead storage. Let’s keep it fair and friendly for all! 🚌✨

A little heads-up: the back seats can be a bit bouncy, especially on those remote roads full of potholes and speed bumps. Everyone takes turns in these seats, too — it’s part of the adventure! 🌄💨

If you have a medical reason or a special need that requires a fixed seat, please consider a private tour — we’ll be happy to tailor the experience just for you.

Is the use of seatbelts compulsory?

Yes — always! 🚐💺 Safety is a top priority, and wearing your seatbelt is mandatory.

Our van is equipped with three-point seatbelts on all seats, which can be adjusted to two points if needed for extra comfort. Please note: lying down on the seats while driving is not allowed, as it puts you and others at risk. Also, by law, both the driver and the passenger can be fined if the seatbelt isn’t being used. Our crew is obliged to remind anyone not wearing their seatbelt. Thanks for helping us keep things safe and smooth for everyone on board! 💛

Is Overland Travel right for me? What qualities do I need?

Overland travel is an amazing way to explore the world — full of wild landscapes, real connections, and unforgettable moments. But it’s not your typical holiday! It’s an adventure, and that means embracing the unexpected, sharing space with others, and sometimes going a little outside your comfort zone.

You don’t need to be a hardcore explorer — just come with a positive attitude and an open mind 💫. You’ll also need a basic level of fitness, since you’ll need to carry your bag, join walks, and hop in and out of the van with ease 🏃‍♀️🧳. It’s also important to be flexible and enjoy the group vibe — after all, teamwork and mutual respect make the journey even more special 🤝💚.

If you love new experiences, can go with the flow, and are up for a bit of adventure, you’ll feel right at home on one of our trips! 🌈✨

What are the age requirements for your trips?

Our group tours are designed for adventurous 20-somethings to travellers young at heart in their 60s! There’s no strict age limit, but basic physical fitness and a collaborative, open-minded spirit are essential to ensure group harmony and a smooth experience.

For most trips rated as “easy” to “easy-moderate,” we welcome travellers up to their 70s, as long as they’re fit for light walks, stairs, van travel, and a bit of camping. However, on tours involving more demanding hikes or remote areas (rated “moderate to serious”), we recommend them only for travellers under 60 due to the physical challenges involved.

Passengers aged 16–17 are welcome if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For families with younger children, we’re happy to offer private or family-special departures — just get in touch and we’ll help design the perfect adventure for you. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🌍

Punctually, we also launch special editions for specific age groups or solo travellers — these will always be clearly announced as such.

What is the Fitness Level Required?

You don’t need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is essential to fully enjoy our adventures. You should be able to walk unaided, climb stairs, and get in and out of the van (steps are around 45 cm high). Some days involve hikes on uneven terrain, uphill walks, or warm weather — so be prepared for moderate physical effort.

You’ll also need to carry your luggage at times, walk short distances with it, lift it in and out of the van, and occasionally navigate stairs or uneven ground in hotels and campsites. For this reason, we strongly recommend backpacks or duffel bags instead of hard suitcases.

Some of our tours include at least one more demanding activity. That said, you’re always welcome to skip any activity that feels too demanding for you. For example, you’re free to enjoy a coffee at the top while others go trekking down a canyon. Just keep in mind that our crew’s focus must remain on the group as a whole and the planned itinerary.

Important note: Our crew has the responsibility to evaluate everyone’s physical capabilities for certain activities and may ask someone not to participate if they believe it’s unsafe or unsuitable. Please respect their decision — even if the activity seems easy at first, it might become difficult along the way, and slowing the group down can impact everyone’s wellbeing and enjoyment.

I have a disability – can I join a Lupita trip?

Lupita is committed to making travel as inclusive and accessible as possible. Whenever it doesn’t compromise the group experience, we’re happy to welcome travellers of all abilities and discuss any specific needs in advance.

Travelling with a companion who can assist you can be helpful, and if a group trip doesn’t suit your needs, we may be able to offer a customised private tour instead. Feel free to reach out — we’re here to help craft the best possible experience for you.

What are the Physical Ratings shown in your itineraries?

To help you pick the right adventure based on your fitness and preferences, each Lupita trip is assigned a Physical Rating from 1 to 5, with 1 being the most relaxed and 5 the most physically demanding.

Most of our trips are rated 2 to 4, meaning a good mix of fun challenges, camping, and hotels — nothing extreme, but enough to keep it adventurous! Keep in mind: some optional activities might be tougher than the tour’s overall rating. Here’s what each level means:

  • Relaxing – Hotel stays. Light walks and mild activities. A chill pace with a bit of movement.

  • Easy – Active days with hiking, stairs, and uneven terrain. Sometimes, a bit of camping.

  • Moderate – Active days with trekking, stairs, and uneven terrain. Some camping and cooking.

  • Serious – Long hikes, often with gear. Suitable for fit travellers.

  • Heart-Pumping – Physically intense from start to finish. For the highly active.

What kind of weather and insects should we expect?

The weather in the regions we explore is usually pleasant, with sunny days and daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). But variety is part of the adventure! In some lowland areas, it can climb up to 40°C (104°F), while in the mountains or at altitudes above 3,000 m (9,800 ft), it might drop to around 5°C (41°F) — especially at night. Between July and October, we’re in the rainy season, which often means short but intense showers in the afternoons or evenings. So pack for all kinds of weather — sun, rain, heat, and the occasional chilly night, depending on your route.

As for mosquitoes and bugs — yep, they’re part of nature! 🦟 In coastal and jungle areas, they tend to show up more often. We always prioritise accommodations with mosquito nets in the rooms, though common spaces like restaurants may not always have them. Bring a good insect repellent, and wear light, breathable long sleeves, trousers, socks, and closed shoes in the evenings — even if it’s warm. You might also spot jungle critters like spiders from time to time, but they’re usually harmless, and our crew or local hosts will assist if needed.

Overland Travel sounds a bit too adventurous for me… do you offer something else?

Absolutely! We get it — camping, long drives, and bumpy jungle roads aren’t everyone’s idea of a holiday 😅 That’s why we’ve created a range of options for different travel styles, comfort levels, and energy levels.

If you’d rather skip the camping, some of our tours offer cabin or room upgrades during camping nights (subject to availability).

Or, you can check out our Comfort Trails — a special category of trips with 100% hotel or lodge accommodation, no camping involved. We also design Private Premium Tours for couples, families or small groups who prefer shorter driving days, a slower pace, and fewer physically demanding activities — all while staying in charming, handpicked hotels.


 

Accommodation & Meals

What type of accommodation is used on your standard tours?

We provide carefully chosen for your comfort and enjoyment. Accommodations range from good hotels with modern amenities to community-run eco-tourism centres and well-equipped campsites. In remote areas, experience basic camping for a true adventure with nature. Alternative arrangements are available if needed, ensuring a pleasant stay throughout the journey.

On our Backpacker’s Editions, we include good hostels and more camping, making the trip more affordable but still keeping great standards.

How is the accommodation on Backpacker's Editions?

Accommodations on our Backpacker’s Edition tours consist of a blend of basic hotels, hostels, and camping sites, all selected to provide optimal conditions while maintaining affordability. While we aim to arrange single-gender rooms and minimize interactions with non-tour participants, we cannot guarantee this. Participants should be comfortable sharing accommodations with individuals of various genders and other backpackers not affiliated with our group. Please note that accommodations may vary, and we strive to ensure fairness through rotational assignments.

How much camping is involved?

Our trips typically involve an average camping percentage ranging from 0% to 35%, with most tours around 20%. If you’re new to camping, there’s no need to worry as our specially equipped vehicle comes with all the necessary camping and cooking gear. We provide tents, sleeping bags, liners, and basic mats to ensure a comfortable camping experience, and our experienced crew will give you a briefing and assist you throughout the process.

If camping isn’t your preference, normally there are options to upgrade to cabins during camping stops, choose no-camping trips, or even request a tailor-made itinerary to suit your preferences. We strive to accommodate everyone’s preferences and ensure a delightful travel experience for all.

Can I upgrade to a cabin when camping?

While we prioritize offering a unique and immersive camping experience in amazing campsites, we cannot guarantee room upgrades to cabins during camping days. Priority is given to passengers who choose to camp, and those opting for cabins may need to wait for campers to check in first, regardless of the number of people choosing the cabin option. We aim to provide the best possible experience within the original plan and itinerary, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility in this regard.

Can I upgrade to a room in hostels?

Upgrades to private rooms while in hostels and campings are often available but not guaranteed and cannot be pre-booked. Priority is given to the crew for optimal rest, particularly the driver. If there are limited upgrades, they will be allocated on a rotational basis to ensure fairness.

Can I book upgrades in advance?

While upgrades are usually available, they cannot be guaranteed in advance. Your crew will assist you in booking upgrades during the trip. If camping is not your preference, you can opt for a 100% hotel trip or inquire about our tailor-made options. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, please inform us in advance if you wish to request an upgrade or have specific requirements. We will do our best to accommodate your needs and prioritize your comfort and satisfaction during the journey.

What will the food be like? And do you cater to dietary needs?

Food is one of the highlights of any trip — and in Mexico, it’s a whole adventure in itself! Our itineraries give you the freedom to enjoy delicious group meals or go explore local restaurants on your own, depending on your mood and budget. In most touristy towns you’ll find loads of great options, but in remote areas the food might be simpler — still tasty, just more traditional and homemade.

Common meals include quesadillas, eggs, beans, cheese, mushrooms, tortillas, chicken, or pork. If you’re vegetarian, you’ll always find something, though options might be a bit repetitive. Vegans, fair warning: it can be trickier in some areas, but we’ll do our best to help! 🌿✨

We’re always happy to accommodate dietary requirements when we can — just let us know at the time of booking. Our crew will help guide you throughout the journey, especially in places where you can’t just grab a menu. In some remote lodges, we may include set meals in advance to keep things smooth and efficient ⏳🥘

💡 Pro tip: Bringing a card with your dietary requirements written in Spanish can be a game-changer when eating away from the group! 🇲🇽✅

How do cook group meals work?

On some tours, we prep a few meals ourselves — and yes, that means as a team! Our crew helps out, but everyone joins in with small tasks: chopping, cooking, or washing up. It’s a fun, social part of the trip and often becomes a highlight! 🌈✨

These “cook group meals” are marked in the itinerary and happen when it makes sense — like in remote areas or when we need an early start and the hotel breakfast is too late. This keeps us flexible, saves time, and lets us enjoy more of the adventure. Think yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, and something hearty like curry, pasta or veggie stew for dinner. 🍝🍛🥗

It’s a great way to mix things up from tacos (though we love those too! 🌮), and we’ll always consider dietary needs — no worries if you’re veggie or don’t want to handle meat. Everyone helps with clean-up, too — teamwork makes the dream work! 🧼🌟


 

Services

What’s the water situation on tour?

Tap water in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize isn’t safe to drink, so purified water is a must — not just for drinking, but also (if you’re sensitive) for brushing your teeth.

💧 No need to worry — we’ve got you covered! We carry large, sealed 20-litre containers of potable drinking water in the van, so you can refill your bottle as often as needed. It’s one of the little ways we try to reduce plastic waste and leave no trace 🌿♻️ — keeping you hydrated and the planet happy!

Also, many of the accommodations we use offer filtered water too, usually available at reception. Just bring a refillable water bottle (or grab one locally when you arrive).

Is the accommodation air-conditioned?

While some accommodations we choose may have air conditioning, it is not guaranteed for all locations, especially in remote and immersive community stays. Most accommodations have fans to provide relief from hot and humid conditions, which can reach up to 40ºC in certain regions. We prioritize immersive experiences that support local communities and offer enriching cultural encounters.

If you specifically desire accommodations with air conditioning, please check the itinerary beforehand to see which hotels offer this feature, although occasional failures or issues with the units may still occur. Our goal is to provide you with a comfortable and authentic travel experience.

Will there be access to charging points?

Yes, you will have regular access to electricity during the trip. Our vehicle is equipped with USB charging points, so you can keep your devices powered throughout the journey. Additionally, most of the hotels and camping areas we stay at have 120 V charging points, which use the American plug system.

Will there be Wi-Fi access?

During the trip, you will generally have access to Wi-Fi at least every two days. Wi-Fi availability and quality can vary depending on the location. In some accommodations, Wi-Fi might be accessible only in communal areas of the hotel and not in individual rooms. Plus, on very few accommodations, Wi-Fi is paid apart at your own cost.

Will there be internet data for mobile use?

There is mobile data coverage in most areas we’ll visit, but keep in mind that some destinations are quite remote, so coverage can be limited at times. Having mobile data in Mexico is highly recommended — it will help you navigate towns, keep up with WhatsApp group updates, and even locate your phone if it’s lost.

We suggest getting an eSIM like Yesim or a similar brand before you arrive. Alternatively, buying a local SIM card is easy, affordable, and widely available (and we can help you with this).

If you’re from the US, most major carriers work perfectly well in Mexico, so you might already be covered. Please check with your company.

Will I be able to do any laundry?

Yes, laundry facilities are available during our trips, both through local services and at hotels. Besides, we can provide equipment for you to do your laundry while camping. While we aim to ensure access to facilities, it’s wise to bring enough clothes to last the tour. Laundry facilities are usually available within a few days, but on some tours, it may take up to 7 days. Rest assured, we’ll help you manage your laundry needs during the trip.


 

Rooming

How do you arrange room sharing? Who will I share with?

Room sharing on the trip is arranged to create a positive group dynamic. If you booked with a specific person, you’ll share a room with them. Solo travellers share rooms with others of the same gender on a rotation basis. If you prefer your own space, you can pay for an individual room (subject to availability). Hotel stays usually have twin rooms, sometimes triple or single rooms. Community stays may involve sharing basic cabins with more than three people (occasionally open-gender). While camping, you’ll share a spacious tent with another passenger.

Accommodations on our Backpacker’s Edition tours include multi-shared dorms in hostels. While we aim to arrange single-gender rooms and minimize interactions with non-tour participants, we cannot guarantee this. Participants should be comfortable sharing accommodations with individuals of various genders and other backpackers not affiliated with our group. Please note that accommodations may vary, and we strive to ensure fairness through rotational assignments.

Do you charge a single supplement fee, or can I be matched with another solo traveller?

Lupita Overland offers flexibility to accommodate your preferences. Solo travellers are typically paired with others of the same gender, sharing rooms and tents on a rotation basis. If you desire your own space, individual rooms are available for an additional fee (subject to availability).

Can I book a Single Room?

Yes, you can book a single room for private accommodation throughout the trip. Please inform us of your preference for single accommodation when booking. However, single rooms cannot be guaranteed for all stops, and there might be instances where you’ll need to share accommodations with other travellers. Even if you choose the single-room occupancy rate, there could be cases where the number of travellers is uneven, and some passengers end up with single rooms without paying the single-room occupancy rate.

Is it possible to reserve a Triple Room for our group of three?

While there are limited stops where triple rooms are available, we will do our best to accommodate your group in a triple room whenever possible, as per your preference. Most hotel rooms typically come with two “matrimonial beds” that are 135 cm wide.

By default, we will arrange for your group of three to stay in one twin room, with the remaining individual sharing with another traveller of the same gender. However, if you prefer to share a matrimonial bed, please let us know, but please be aware that this decision is final and cannot be changed afterwards. Additionally, please note that there is no discount for using one less bed.

I'm travelling with a partner, can I make sure we have a double bed?

If you’re travelling with a partner and wish to share a room with a double bed, please inform us at the time of booking. While we cannot guarantee a double bed in all accommodations, we will make every effort to accommodate your request. Rest assured that we will strive to provide you with suitable rooming arrangements for you and your partner throughout the tour.

Can I make sure I share a Twin Room (two separate beds) with my friend?

Certainly! If you are travelling with a friend and would like to share a room but have separate beds, please let us know at the time of booking. As most of our trips are organized on a twin-share basis, we will automatically accommodate you and your friend in the same room.


 

Safety and Travel Insurance

Are Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize safe countries for tourists?

In general, Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize are safe countries for tourists, and the locals are welcoming and helpful to visitors. As with any adventure travel, there is always an inherent risk, but choosing a reputable local company like Lupita can significantly reduce this risk. We prioritize security and have numerous safety measures in place to ensure your well-being.

For additional travel advisories, you can check the websites of your government’s travel advice. Please note that these government sites are required to be cautious in their advisories. The vast majority of travellers do not experience any of the reported problems.

What measures do you take to make your tours safer?

At Lupita Overland, we prioritize the safety and well-being of our travellers and implement various measures to ensure a secure travel experience. These measures include regularly monitoring travel advisories from reputable sources, maintaining constant communication with local authorities and suppliers, and having experienced crew members who are knowledgeable about local customs and safety protocols.

What are the safety measures in your vehicle?

At Lupita Overland, we prioritize vehicle safety and have implemented various measures to ensure a secure and worry-free journey.

Our vehicle is new and well-maintained, undergoing regular checks at the official Volkswagen Workshop. We provide compulsory 3-point retractable seatbelts on every seat and have emergency hammers, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits on board. Passengers are required to use hand sanitiser, and we regularly disinfect the interior for hygiene. Safety cameras, GPS tracking, and an alarm system enhance security. In case of emergencies, we have a recovery system and comprehensive insurance coverage. These measures guarantee a safe and comfortable travel experience for all passengers, providing peace of mind throughout the journey.

Are your drivers experienced? Do both crews drive?

Unlike other companies that only have one driver, both of our crew members are experienced drivers, and they play crucial roles in ensuring a safe and enjoyable travel experience for all our passengers. The main driver is responsible for driving the vehicle during most of the journey. However, the tour leader is also capable of driving when needed, creating a well-coordinated and secure travel environment.

Your safety is our top priority, and our crew follows strict resting periods and takes necessary precautions to ensure alertness during long drives. You can travel with confidence, knowing that our experienced crew is committed to your well-being throughout the journey.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

Having travel insurance is essential to protect yourself against unforeseen events and medical emergencies while on the trip. We require all passengers to have comprehensive medical travel insurance before the trip begins. Before joining the group, you will need to provide your insurance policy number and the insurance company’s 24-hour emergency contact number.

What kind of Travel Insurance do I need?

We accept any travel insurance provider as long as we have the necessary policy details, including the policy number and the company’s 24-hour emergency contact number. It should cover medical expenses, emergency repatriation, personal liability, and trip cancellation or curtailment. Also, check if it includes coverage for COVID-19 treatment and repatriation. While other inclusions like loss of baggage or flight coverage are optional, it’s best to consider them for comprehensive protection. Please ensure your insurance is valid from the first day of your trip with Lupita Overland.

I have Annual or Credit Card Insurance. Is it enough to travel with Lupita?

While we accept any travel insurance provider, it’s crucial to carefully review your annual or credit card insurance to ensure it provides sufficient coverage for adventure and overland travel.

Check if that medical coverage is adequate for the destinations you’ll visit and the activities you’ll engage in. Ensure it includes repatriation for medical emergencies and covers remote areas. Confirm the policy duration, international coverage, and if it includes COVID-19-related aspects. Consider personal belongings coverage for valuable items. Standard policies may not suffice for overland trips, so review your policy or contact your provider to ensure comprehensive protection during your journey. Having appropriate insurance will give you peace of mind throughout your adventure with Lupita Overland.

What Measures can I take to make my Tour Safer?

Ensuring your safety is our top priority, and there are some simple steps you can take to make your tour experience even more enjoyable: Keep your belongings secure, avoid unattended items, carry copies of important documents, be cautious in crowded areas, stay away from dark streets, familiarize yourself with local customs, and stay informed with safety guidelines.

Have emergency contact information readily accessible, be mindful of your surroundings, and stay updated on travel advisories. Consider using a cash passport for extra security and using official exchange bureaux for currency exchange. Avoid illegal activities, respect local authorities, and keep migration receipts. Are there Safe Boxes at the Hotels and your Vehicle?

While some hotels may offer safe boxes for guest use, it’s generally not recommended to use them as people often forget their belongings when checking out. Instead, Lupita Overland provides a safe in the van for your valuables, and the crew will explain the protocol for its use during the tour.

While we take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your belongings, please be aware that we cannot be held responsible in case of any unfortunate incidents, such as theft from the van. Ultimately, the decision of where to keep your important belongings is up to you. We advise you to consider the options and make the choice that you feel most comfortable with during the trip. Our goal is to provide you with a safe and enjoyable experience throughout the tour.


 

Health

Do you carry a complete First-aid kit? Should I bring any Medication?

Yes, we carry a basic first aid kit in our vehicle, and at least one of our crew members has completed a first aid course to provide initial medical assistance if needed. However, travellers should bring any specific medications or personal medical supplies they may require for the trip, as some remote areas may have limited access to medical facilities. Being prepared with sufficient medication ensures a safe and enjoyable journey.

What are the medical and vaccination requirements?

​​As tour operators, we do not require any specific vaccinations for our trips. We recommend consulting with a qualified healthcare professional to get personalized advice on vaccinations and health precautions for your travel destinations. Your doctor can review your vaccination history and recommend necessary and recommended vaccinations based on your itinerary.

Additionally, you can refer to reputable sources like the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) websites for up-to-date travel health information and advisories. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s crucial to stay informed about any travel restrictions and health guidelines specific to COVID-19 for the countries you plan to visit. What Measures can I take to make my Tour Healthier?

To make your tour healthier and more enjoyable, consider the following measures: Carry a hand sanitiser and use it frequently, choose reliable sources for food and water consumption, protect yourself from adverse weather and mosquitoes, don’t push yourself too hard during physically demanding activities, take breaks and communicate with the crew if needed, seek medical advice before the tour, carry a first aid kit, stay informed about health risks in the regions you’ll visit, and take advantage of relaxation opportunities during the trip. Your health and well-being are important, and by following these measures, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience with Lupita Overland.

What happens if any integrant of the group gets ill or injured?

If any member of the group becomes ill or injured during the trip, the Lupita Overland crew will provide necessary support and assistance. They may arrange for a visit to a local doctor or medical facility if needed. The group is expected to be flexible and understanding in such situations, and the affected individual is encouraged to cooperate to recover quickly. Each person should take care of themselves, communicate with the crew if unwell, and follow their recommendations. Denying necessary medical attention may result in the individual being asked to leave the trip. The well-being of all participants is a priority, and by taking care of yourself and following the crew’s advice, you can ensure a positive and safe experience for everyone.

What should I do if I feel unwell during the trip?

Ensuring the well-being of the entire group is crucial if you’re feeling unwell. Communicate it to your crew and take additional hygiene precautions, refrain from cooking, and maintain a distance from the group. Consider skipping some activities until feeling better. Masks are provided in the van; please use them, particularly if you have a sore throat. To minimize the risk of infection, we recommend arranging separate sleeping accommodations. Your cooperation is appreciated for the collective health and comfort of the group.

What if I get ill or injured on the trip and am unable to continue?

Our leaders are trained to deal with these situations and we’ll endeavor to get you help as quickly as possible. If you must leave the trip early due to illness, we will help you find appropriate medical care and ensure someone at home is aware of the situation. We will do whatever we can to get you home or on your onward journey. Your travel insurance, which is compulsory on all our trips, should cover any costs incurred if illness occurs.

Will refrigeration be available for medicines? eg. Insulin

Refrigeration for medicines, including insulin, cannot be guaranteed for the entire trip. While our vehicle has a fridge, and some city hotels may provide access to small fridges, remote areas may not have this facility. We encourage you to inform us in advance if you require refrigeration for medication, so we can make necessary arrangements whenever possible to meet your medical needs during the trip. Your well-being is essential to us, and we will do our best to accommodate your requirements.

Is it safe to eat fresh food and have ice in drinks during the trip?

Generally yes! 🧊🍍 In restaurants and touristy areas, ice is usually made from purified water and is safe to enjoy. Fresh fruits and veggies served in good cafés or restaurants are also fine for most travellers.

That said, when it comes to street food or remote spots, it’s best to play it safe — avoid flavoured ice from stalls, skip salads, and go for cooked or peeled fruits and veggies instead. Better safe than sorry — especially when the adventure’s just getting started! 🌮🌿💦


 

Bookings

Can you book flights for me?

We do not offer flight booking services, so it’s recommended to book your flights independently using popular search engines like Skyscanner or Google Flights. For internal flights in Mexico, consider airlines like Aeromexico for reliability and comfort, or Volaris for more affordable options, but be aware of possible delays. Additionally, ADO is a reputable bus company for comfortable travel within the country. Given the nature of adventure travel, it’s best to have flexible flight options or travel insurance to cover unforeseen changes or cancellations. Can you assist with pre or post-tour accommodation?

We sure can. Just let us know at the time of booking. We can provide options for accommodation in the same hotels where the tour begins and ends, ensuring a seamless experience.

As part of our service, we can also recommend optional activities and attractions based on our local knowledge and expertise.

How do I book an optional activity?

Our itineraries are comprehensive and cover most activities. However, a few optional activities may be available. Our crew will provide you with information about these activities, and you can find a list of them on each trip page. Please note that optional activities’ costs and transportation are not included, but our crew can assist if there’s significant interest. Simply inform the crew of your choices, and payment can be made directly at the activity site.

Can I just do part of the trip?

Certainly, if you need to leave a day or so earlier than the scheduled end, you can sign off the tour, but please note that there won’t be any reimbursement for the unused portion of the trip. However, it is not possible to join the tour days later than it begins to maintain good group dynamics and interaction.

Our longer tours (20 or more days) can be divided into shorter sections of around 10 days, and you have the option to exclusively join any of these sections. Each leg concludes in towns with available airports, making it convenient for you to join or depart at these points. Let us know in advance which section you’d like to join for a seamless experience, and whether you choose one leg or the entire tour, it will be a complete and excellent experience.

Can I make any changes to the itinerary?

Please make sure you are happy with your group trip itinerary before booking because we are unable to change it for individual travellers. However, if you and a group of 6 friends or more would like your own personally designed itinerary, get in contact with us so we can tailor an itinerary just for you.

When is the final due date for my trip?

Full payment is required 30 days before departure to avoid trip cancellation. We’ll email you at least a week before the due date to give you a heads-up.

I tried to pay for my trip but it was unsuccessful, what might the problem be?

Oh no! We want to help you book your next adventure. Online payments through our booking engine might be unsuccessful due to internet connection issues, incorrect payment details, or insufficient funds. If your payment is still not going through after you’ve reviewed all the above, please reach out to [email protected].

If I am travelling solo, will I be charged for having my room?

On our trips, rooming is typically organized on a twin-share basis. As a solo traveller, you will be paired with another traveller of the same gender. However, if you prefer to have your own space, you have the option to pay for an individual room. Single rooms are available on the majority of our trips under request.


 

Changes and Cancellations

Is my trip guaranteed to run?

The trips with Lupita Overland are guaranteed to depart with a minimum of 6 passengers. This ensures that the tours are operated efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner. When you book a trip, you will be able to see if the departure is already guaranteed or not. You can check all our guaranteed departures here.

What happens if a group doesn’t make its minimum required number of passengers?

If you book a tour with Lupita Overland, and the departure is not guaranteed due to insufficient bookings (less than 6 passengers), we will contact you. We will provide alternative dates or other trip options for you to consider. You will have the choice to receive a full refund or keep the payment as credit for the proposed alternative. This approach ensures transparency and allows Lupita Overland to offer a sustainable and enjoyable travel experience for all travellers.

What happens if we need to cancel the tour?

If the tour needs to be cancelled due to reasons beyond the company’s control or insufficient participants, we will contact you to offer alternative dates or trip options. You can choose to receive a refund or keep the payment as credit for the proposed alternative. Lupita aims to provide transparent and fair options in case of cancellations, and we are available to assist and support you throughout the process. My itinerary has been changed, what can I do?

If your itinerary has been changed, we understand that this may be unexpected and can cause concern. We strive to keep our travellers informed and provide options in such situations. If there have been changes to your itinerary, we have likely sent you an email explaining the updates and any available options.

You can reach us via phone or WhatsApp to discuss the changes, ask questions, and explore any alternatives that may suit your preferences. Our team is here to assist you and provide support during this process.

I want to cancel my booking or change the dates, how can I do this?

If you want to cancel your booking or change your travel dates, we offer flexibility up to 60 days before departure with no fees, and you can hold your deposit as a credit for future travel. However, if you wish to change your trip dates within 60 days of departure, a cancellation fee will apply as per our Booking Conditions, and having cancellation insurance at the time of booking may help cover these fees.

To cancel your tour, the lead name must notify us in writing via email at [email protected], and the cancellation charges will vary based on the date we receive the notification. Refunds for flights or transportation to and from the tour’s starting or ending point are not provided, and no refunds will be given for any unused sections of the tour once it has commenced. The cancellation charges help cover the costs associated with reserving accommodations and activities for the original tour dates.

I requested trip extras but don't need them anymore. What are my options?

Trip extras (e.g. extra accommodation) are non-refundable, but you can cancel up to 60 days before departure and save the amount as a credit for future travel with us. To cancel your extras please get in touch writing via email at [email protected].

I booked a trip and now the price is lower, can I have the difference refunded?

Unfortunately, we can’t refund the difference. When you book a trip, you agree to our Booking Conditions, including the total price of the trip at the time of booking. To book the trip at the sale price, you would need to forfeit the non-refundable credit and re-pay your deposit to secure the discounted price, which may not work out in your favour.

My travelling companion can no longer go on our trip. Can someone take their place or can I get a refund?

If your travelling companion can’t join the trip, you may have options depending on timing and circumstances. Before the trip’s departure and outside the pay-in-full period, you might transfer the spot to another traveller, though a fee may apply. If you’re in the pay-in-full period, additional fees may apply as per our Booking Conditions. Payments and Travel Expenses

How can I pay you?

At Lupita Overland, we offer a safe and secure payment process through Stripe, allowing you to use your debit or credit card for booking. Your payment information is encrypted and transmitted securely. We accept credit and debit cards, but American Express cards are only valid for USD accounts. Unfortunately, Mexican cards are not compatible with online payments, so Mexican cardholders can contact us for a bank transfer option. We aim to make the payment process smooth and secure, and our team is available to assist you with any inquiries or concerns.

Do I need to pay any local payment/group found?

No, you do not need to pay any additional local payment or group funds during the tour. Our tour prices cover accommodation and activities. You can have peace of mind knowing that there are no hidden fees or extra payments required once you have booked your tour with Lupita Overland. The price you see is the price you pay, and it includes everything specified in the tour itinerary. We aim to provide transparent pricing and a hassle-free experience for our travellers. What's not included in your tours?

Here’s a summary of what is not included in our tours: Travel insurance, flights to and from the starting and ending points, transportation outside of the tour itinerary, visa and migration costs, airport transfer (except tours beginning in Cancún Airport), optional activities, vaccinations, medicines, extra accommodation or upgrades, contingency expenses, meals at restaurants and drinks, personal spending money, and crew tips (never compulsory, but always appreciated!). How much extra money will I spend while on the trip?

The extra money you’ll spend on the trip varies depending on personal preferences and the tour itinerary. Most activities and a significant portion of meals are covered, but budget for optional activities, visa fees, drinks, souvenirs, laundry, additional meals, and local transportation. Daily expenses for passengers range from 5 to 30 USD. Please carry extra money for unexpected expenses. Should I have some Contingency Money?

Yes, having some contingency money is always a wise decision when travelling, even though such situations are rare. Unexpected events or emergencies can occur, and having extra funds available can provide you with peace of mind and ensure that you can handle any unforeseen expenses. We recommend having at least the equivalent of USD 500 set aside in your bank account as contingency money.

Should I exchange or withdraw?

For your trip, it’s recommended to use a combination of cash and a card. Pay for small daily expenses in local currency, except in Belize, where USD is widely accepted. Use ATMs for withdrawals and select “no” when asked to apply the “bank exchange rate” to avoid extra charges. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted in most cities. Inform your bank about your travel destination to avoid card blocks. You can also exchange cash in big towns along the route. Finally, prioritise safety and secure your money and documents. Card payments are generally only accepted in city restaurants and are best for totals over 500 MXN.

Should I expect En-route refunds if not being able to follow the included plans?

As a policy, en-route refunds for cancellations of included activities, accommodation, or airport transfers cannot be guaranteed and they normally won’t be refunded. Tour prices are based on group rates, and changes or cancellations may not be eligible for refunds. In some cases, small refunds in local currency may be provided for adjustments or cancellations during the trip. Unforeseen circumstances may lead to itinerary changes, and your understanding and flexibility are appreciated. What is the Tipping Policy?

Tips for local guides and included activities are already covered in the tour price, so there is no need to tip them separately. However, if you feel our overland crew has done an excellent job and you wish to show appreciation, a tip is always appreciated, but not obligatory. The approximate amount for tipping the crew is around 2-6 USD per day per crew member, but tipping is entirely at your discretion and within your means.

Tipping in restaurants and optional excursions is common and typically around 10%, if you are pleased with the service. For airport transfers or taxis tipping is not common. At hotels, tipping around 10-20 pesos for assistance with luggage is customary, and you may also leave a small tip for housekeepers. When it comes to street artists, sellers, or beggars, the choice to tip is entirely yours. Supporting local development projects is also a great way to contribute to the community.


 

Packing

What should I pack?

Prepare for your adventure with a concise packing list: opt for a large duffel bag or rucksack over a suitcase, and bring a small day bag along with a fanny pack or shoulder bag for quick-access items. Pack 7-12 sets of underwear, T-shirts, and socks, along with light clothes for warm weather and a few layers for cooler nights. Don’t forget essentials like comfortable shoes, swimwear, toiletries, and medications. Include eco-friendly mosquito repellent and sunscreen, along with a water bottle and charging cables. Remember important documents, a flashlight, and, optionally, casual clothes for evenings out and a book for leisure. Sleeping camping gear is provided, so there’s no need to bring it along. Stay light, flexible, and ready for any weather conditions to fully enjoy your adventure with Lupita Overland!

Is there a luggage limit?

We recommend bringing a main backpack and a daypack. Please note the space for luggage is limited. The largest weight for the main bag is 18 kg per person and dimensions should not exceed 75 x 30 x 30 cm. Best style for your main bag would be a backpack or duffle bag.

If you are a souvenir lover, remember to save some space in your backpack. You might need to ship items back home if you exceed your luggage allowance.

Can I bring a suitcase?

Preferably not. On our trips, you will be required to carry your luggage, sometimes upstairs and on and off transport, through hotel stairs and sometimes crossing one or two blocks depending on the parking situation. We, therefore, recommend you travel with a backpack or duffle bag.

Rigid suitcases might get damaged or scratched during this process. Additionally, please keep in mind that we will normally place the rigid suitcases at the bottom of the rest of the luggage.

What camping equipment is included? Will I need to bring my own?

No need to bring your gear — we’ve got you covered! 🏕️ On all our tours with camping nights, we provide essential equipment so you can travel light and still sleep comfy:

  • A tent with a mosquito net, shared between two people

  • A 15ºC sleeping bag with a clean liner

  • An ultra-light inflatable mattress with an integrated pillow

The only thing we don’t include is a torch or headlamp — your phone light works fine, but if you have a headlamp, it’s always handy! 🔦

Migration Process

Do I need a visa?

For most nationalities, a visa is not required to enter Mexico, Belize, or Guatemala for tourism purposes. However, it’s important to check your specific case online or with the respective embassy before your tour begins. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months with enough blank pages for stamps.

Border fees (entry or exit fees) are not included in our tours and are usually paid individually. We recommend carrying some USD cash as local currency exchange may not be possible before crossing each border. Be cautious of fake websites or services charging for visa application assistance; there’s usually no need to apply online or pay fees before departure.

We can provide an invitation letter for visa application if needed, but standard refund policies apply if your visa is denied. Finally, remember to always ask for official proof of any payment related to migration processes and keep them with you. For more information, please read our Passports & Visas Section. What are the requirements to enter/exit Mexico?

As of the current information available, to enter Mexico, you will need a tourist card (FMM Forma Migratoria Multiple) provided either on the flight or upon arrival. It’s essential to fill out this form and keep it with you during your stay. If you don’t receive a Migratory Form (as it generally happens in Mexico City Airport), make sure to get a passport stamp indicating the length of your stay. You must also have a valid passport, with at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay, and provide proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward ticket.

If entering by air, the DNR, Derechos Migratorios tax is usually included in the price of your airline ticket. However, when entering by land, you may need to pay the tax at the border, around 650 MXN or an equivalent amount in USD. For exiting Mexico, the same DNR tax may apply. Keep a copy of the bill showing the DNR cost to try to avoid paying it again.

What are the requirements to enter/exit Belize?

As of the current information available, to enter Belize, most nationalities do not need a visa for tourism purposes, and you are typically granted a stay of up to 30 days upon entry. Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay. When exiting Belize by land, you will need to pay a departure fee, which is around 30 USD or 60 BZD.

What are the requirements to enter/exit Guatemala?

As of the current information available, to enter Guatemala, most nationalities do not need a visa for tourism purposes, and you are typically granted a stay of up to 90 days upon entry. Ensure you have a valid passport with at least six months of validity beyond your intended stay.

If entering Guatemala by air, you must have an exit flight ticket indicating departure within the allowed 90-day stay period. If entering by land, you may be required to pay a small exit fee of approximately 10-20 GTQ (Guatemalan Quetzales).

Arrival and Beginning of the Tour

What documents will I receive before I travel?

Before you travel with Lupita Overland, you will receive a detailed itinerary with information about daily activities, accommodations, and important details. You will also receive a short schedule overview for each day. Printed copies of the itinerary will be available in the tour van, and a printed copy of the short schedule will be provided during the pre-departure meeting. You will also receive guides and documents with valuable information about tour stops and local attractions to enhance your travel experience. These resources will ensure you have all the necessary information for a memorable trip.

Do you arrange airport transfers?

For the most efficient transfer to your hotel, consider using official shared vans, which you can pre-book at www.bookaway.com to ensure fair pricing. Prices usually range from 10-20 USD, depending on your destination. Alternatively, look for transfer service kiosks at the airport exits for official pricing and secure payment options. Avoid paying directly to drivers and tipping. Although we can arrange private transfers with drivers holding signs, we advise against it due to higher costs without added benefits.

What time can I check in at my arrival hotel?

Check-in times at hotels can vary, but they are typically between midday and 3 p.m. If you arrive at your hotel earlier than the designated check-in time, you can usually store your luggage with the hotel and explore the area until your room is ready.

Can I request an early check-in?

We can’t confirm an early check-in, but we can assist in booking you a night of pre-accommodation at the same hotel. If you don’t wish to pay for the extra night, you can try your luck locally (they may let you in early if the room is free) or you can store your luggage.

When and where does the tour officially begin? Is there a Pre-departure meeting?

The official start of the tour is the pre-departure meeting. The specific location and time of the meeting will be provided in your tour itinerary. This is when the tour officially kicks off, and you’ll have the opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and tour leaders, setting the stage for an exciting and memorable journey.

The pre-departure meeting is a crucial event to ensure that all participants are well-informed and ready for the upcoming adventure. During this meeting, important information is shared, and any last-minute questions or concerns can be addressed.

Can I swim at the beaches we visit?

The suitability for swimming varies depending on the stop. While some beaches might not be suitable for swimming, there are always other interesting activities to enjoy. For instance, some beaches along the Pacific Coast are perfect for surfing but may pose risks for swimming. On every trip, we’ll make sure to find a suitable swimming stop when it is available.

Will we encounter sargassum in the Caribbean Sea?

Sargassum is a floating seaweed that can form dense mats. While it’s a natural part of the ecosystem, excessive blooms can disrupt beaches, tourism, and local economies.

Unfortunately, sargassum algae are quite common in the Caribbean… Its presence is unpredictable from November to March, and from April to September, it is commonly present. Additionally, expensive beach clubs have taken over much of the Riviera Maya coast in places like Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

Because of this, we generally don’t visit the beach in the Riviera Maya Instead, we spend ample time at Bacalar Lagoon and cenotes, which offer better swimming options. If you’re interested in visiting the beach at Riviera Maya, consider adding 1-2 extra days at the beginning or end of the tour.

What are the best months to travel to Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize?

The prime time to visit is from November to March when the weather is typically dry, with cooler, more agreeable temperatures across these countries. This period also coincides with the high season, meaning more tourists and a vibrant atmosphere, particularly around holidays like Día de los Muertos in Mexico.

April to May marks the end of the dry season. While it’s also a good time to travel, be prepared for scorching temperatures, especially in lower-altitude regions. The landscape can appear quite dry during these months, which may not be as visually appealing.

During the rainy season, June to October, expect frequent, intense afternoon showers. However, these rains cool down the temperatures, making the mornings very pleasant. The countryside is lush, which is perfect for nature enthusiasts.

Temperatures vary significantly depending on altitude. You could experience anything from a chilly 5°C (40°F) in the highlands to a sweltering 40°C (100°F) in coastal and lowland areas. This wide range requires packing layers to adapt to different climates throughout some tours.
