On your trip, you’ll travel in Lupita’s vehicle, an extra-large Volkswagen Crafter 2020. We adapted it to take us into areas where conventional tours do not go. Please consider our vehicle as your home. Please check further at our vehicle page.
At Lupita, our driving days are quite short (usually one morning). Tours around northern Mexico may need a few long driving days, but we always allow enough time to enjoy some nice stops along the way. Please note that breakfast time in Mexican hotels often begins around 8 am. Thus, we usually wait till 8-9 am to leave in the mornings.
Please be aware that the roads in many of the areas we visit are bumpy… Always use your seatbelt (it is compulsory in the countries we visit). Don’t leave heavy objects in the overhead storage and take care of not laying your head on the windows!
All our trips are run by two passionate tour leaders who will ensure your trip is both enjoyable and safe. Our main tour leader and driver, Jaime, is from Spain but has been living on and off Mexico since 2012. The other crew member may vary, she/he sometimes will be western and sometimes Mexican. Sometimes, both of the tour leaders will drive and sometimes one of them will be the driver.
To ensure you get the best in local knowledge, we also hire local guides at sights of interest along the way.
Your leader will provide practical information about the places you are travelling through and offer suggestions for things to do and see. Whilst not being “traditional” guides, they have a general knowledge of the visited places. It is also good to keep in mind that our crew have an Overland vehicle to drive and maintain. Thus, sometimes you will be exploring on your own.
On your trip, you will be part of a group of up to 9 passengers of all ages and nationalities sharing a passion for travel. An important part of Lupita’s travel concept is the sense of community. So, the more you put in, the more you will get out!
As a part of a group of travellers, you will take part in some tasks such as helping with the luggage, monitoring the fridge etc… In the case of camping, you might find yourself putting your tent up and helping to cook on a rotation basis. Your crew will assist you with all this, and make sure all of us have fun. Many preferred moments from our passengers are from the camping days!
Our itineraries are an intention, but travel in more remote areas is unpredictable. Thus, there can be adverse weather, strikes or mechanical issues that affect the trip. There may also be higher unpredictability than in your usual life or other forms of travel. Besides, we may include a local festival, extra time at a beach or a detour to a local school into the itinerary.
You will have seen from this section that Overland travel may not be for everyone. All in all, overland is a type of travel for those who want to take part, don’t mind discomfort or uncertainty, are happy with a flexible itinerary, enjoy camping and thrive on the thrills of travel.
