Tourism has been a threat to many indigenous communities throughout the past decades. However, we believe in a different approach to tourism, sustainably creating local commercial opportunities. Please check the following tips about Responsible Travel, let’s make locals proud of us!
General Tips
Your crew can help you to learn and use some words in Spanish. Locals love it and it will help you to meet new people and traditions
When in Rome, do as the Romans do: Observing local people’s behaviours and traditions might help you to empathize and avoid offence
- Dress appropriately and modestly mostly at worship places. You can consult your crew to avoid unpleasant experiences
Always ask before taking pictures, some people might not like it. In some regions such as the countryside of Chiapas, photos are even considered a way of “capturing the soul”. Showing your photos on your camera display might change their mood if you have a negative experience
Always use trash cans or take your trash with you. Leave no trace at any place you visit. If you can’t find a place where to dispose of p.e. old batteries give them to your crew
Consider supporting welfare, environmental and cultural projects that you will visit during your trip when you come back home
- Be friendly and respect local customs. That’s the key to Responsible Travel!
Shopping
Buy and eat local. Support family-run businesses and restaurants rather than international companies. It’s the easiest way to learn about local traditions and get a deeper experience
Do you like souvenirs? Shop with local artisans and be reasonable with bargaining. Check-in more than one shop if possible
Avoid buying water bottles. Refill a reusable one with purified water always available on our vehicle
Refuse plastic bags at shops. We have shopping bags available on our vehicle
When visiting natural reserves and camping, follow the instructions of your local guide, try to be silent, stick to the paths and leave the area the same way you found it
Don’t buy handicrafts or food made from endangered species. Preserve natural habitats for future visitors and avoid problems at customs
Tipping and donations
All tips for local guides are included in our tours. Yet, please consider tipping waiters/musicians at restaurants, etc. What you might consider just a small service might be the support for a whole family. Your crew can advise you regarding tipping.
Finding children and other people begging can be a common thing, so it is local people give money to them. Doing this is up to you, but our recommendation is to consider supporting local development projects, which is more useful than giving money. Your crew will assist you further on this topic while on the trip
