New to Overland Travel? Or just curious about how we roll? 🚐💬
From what our vans are like to what’s included, accommodation, packing tips and more — find the answers to your questions below!
To us, Overland travel is more than a trip — it’s an expedition. The more you engage, the richer your journey becomes. 🚐🌎 Overland is about diving into real experiences: connecting with communities, exploring hidden gems, and embracing the unexpected. You’ll visit iconic sites, but also trek through jungles, meet inspiring locals, and camp under the stars.
Think of it like visiting a good friend who lives in an incredible destination. They know the coolest spots, the hidden gems, the tastiest tacos, and the wildest stories — and they’ve planned an epic road trip just for you. That friend? That’s your crew. 💛 They’re there to guide you, support you, listen to you, and help make it your adventure — and of course, to join you for dinner, a mezcal, or a spontaneous dance party under the stars. 🌮🍹🎉
It’s also about the group — because shared moments are the most memorable ones. We’ve seen true friendships born on the road that have lasted for years (seriously!). Group dynamics are essential, and everyone is expected to show care, kindness, and respect to one another during the journey. 🤝💬💚
And hey — lending a hand is part of the fun! Whether it’s helping with dinner, supporting a fellow traveller, giving the crew a hand, or just singing your heart out around the campfire, you’re part of the team. 🎶🍲🤝

To us, overlanding is more than a holiday—it’s an expedition. 🚐🌎 Think of it like visiting a good friend who lives in an incredible destination: they know the coolest spots, the hidden gems, the tastiest tacos, and the wildest stories. That friend? That’s your Lupita crew. 💛
This style of travel is all about:
Diving into real experiences: From trekking through jungles and exploring ancient ruins to connecting with inspiring locals and camping under the stars.
True group dynamics: Shared moments build the best memories. Everyone is expected to show care, kindness, and respect to one another. 🤝
Being part of the team: Lending a hand is half the fun! Whether it’s helping with a group dinner, supporting a fellow traveller, or singing around the campfire, you are part of the crew. 🎶🍲
Bring curiosity, respect, and an open mind — and we promise: unforgettable memories, new friendships, and stories you’ll keep telling for years. ✨
Not always—and that’s part of the adventure! 😄 Overlanding requires flexibility. While we always do our best to stick to the plan, things like tropical weather, unpredictable road conditions, or local events can lead to itinerary changes. Stay open-minded, embrace the unexpected, and you’ll find that the unexpected moments often make the best stories! 🌦🚐
Absolutely—that’s where the magic happens! 🛠🔥 On a Lupita trip, you’re an active participant, not just a passenger. Expect to pitch in with fun, small team tasks like setting up camp, grocery shopping, or cooking. We keep a rotating “jobs” list so everything stays fair and light. This shared teamwork creates amazing bonds and a true sense of adventure. The more you get involved, the richer your journey becomes! 🌍⛺🍲
Our group tours are led entirely in English, as it is the common language among our international travellers. 🗣
And yes, basic English is absolutely fine! 🌍💬 We frequently welcome explorers from all over the world who don’t speak perfectly but love to connect and share the adventure. To keep the group integrated and having fun together, we just ask you to keep a couple of things in mind:
Everything runs in English: To maintain a great group dynamic, the entire trip is conducted in English. Our crew leads all briefings in English, and we do not offer double translations.
Keep the van united: Out of respect for everyone on board, we ask that even if you speak Spanish, all group activities and conversations stay in English so no one feels excluded. Let’s keep the team spirit high! 👥❤️
The Alternative: If English really isn’t your thing, no worries at all! We highly recommend booking a Private Tour, where we can comfortably run the entire trip in Spanish, Portuguese, French, or German (just give us a bit of notice!). 🇲🇽🇵🇹🇫🇷🇩🇪
Absolutely! Most of our travellers join us solo, and many leave with lifelong friends. 🌍✨ Our small-group trips are designed to be warm, social, and inclusive from day one.
Solo but never alone: You’ll meet like-minded explorers of all ages and backgrounds, sharing an authentic adventure where group dynamics come naturally.
Room Sharing: To avoid extra costs, solo travellers are automatically matched with a roommate of the same gender to share twin rooms or tents.
Want your own space? No problem! If you’d prefer total privacy, you can easily add a single room supplement during your booking process. 🛏️
Think less “tourist checklist” and more unforgettable local experiences. We mix iconic highlights with hidden gems to give you a genuine taste of culture and nature. 🗺️🤩
What to expect: Hiking active volcanoes, cooking alongside Mayan families, sailing turquoise lagoons, exploring ancient ruins, and spotting wildlife in the jungle.
The Breakdown: Most trips are perfectly balanced with roughly 75% guided activities, 20% free time to explore independently, and 5% optional add-ons.
No stress booking: Unlike other companies, we don’t leave you stressing over what’s worth booking or charging you extra on the ground. If an experience is awesome and essential, it’s already included! 🎒✨
Definitely! 🌿 We know how important it is to wander at your own pace, soak in the local vibe, or just chill out without a schedule.
Our itineraries are thoughtfully paced so you don’t feel rushed. You will have plenty of free time at key stops—especially in vibrant towns and colourful villages that are perfect for independent exploring. Whether you want to discover a cosy café, visit a local museum, go shopping, or just people-watch in the central plaza with a fresh juice, the time is yours. ☕🎨🛍️
Meet Lupita—our custom 2020 Volkswagen Crafter Minibus and the absolute heart of our overland adventures! 🚐
The Main Setup: She comfortably seats up to 12 people (10 travellers + 2 crew) with plenty of room for luggage. Lupita is fully equipped with A/C, USB chargers in every row, a Bluetooth sound system, a large fridge for cold drinks, and all the camping gear needed for nights under the stars. 🌌
Alternatives: For private tours of 5 travellers or fewer, we sometimes use high-quality rental vehicles for greater flexibility. For specific non-camping group tours or larger groups, we may use large, comfortable coaches with professional drivers.
Our trips are designed to maximise adventure, not road time! 🛣️
Daily Drive Times: Most driving days range from 2 to 5 hours, with only a few longer transit days (up to 8 hours maximum).
The Routine: We break up the journey nicely by stopping every 2–3 hours at interesting spots along the way to stretch, grab local snacks, and take bathroom breaks. 🚻
To keep things fair and friendly, we rotate seats regularly so everyone gets a turn in the best spots. 🔄
The Rules: “Reserving” seats by leaving bags, jackets, or personal belongings on them is not allowed. After every drive, all items must go into the overhead storage.
Bumpy Roads: The back seats can be a bit bouncy, especially on remote roads with potholes and speed bumps. Everyone takes turns back there—it’s part of the overland experience! 💨
Exceptions: The only temporary exception is if someone is experiencing motion sickness; in that case, they can use the front seat until they feel better.
Medical Needs: If you have a medical condition or special need that strictly requires a fixed seat, our group tours might not be the best fit. Please consider booking a Private Tour, where we can fully tailor the vehicle setup just for you.
Is the use of seatbelts compulsory? – Yes, always! Safety is our top priority, and wearing your seatbelt is mandatory by law for both drivers and passengers. ⚠️ Please note that lying down on the seats while driving is not allowed, as it puts you and others at risk. Thanks for helping us keep things safe and smooth! 👍
Overlanding is an incredible way to explore the world, but it’s not a typical resort holiday! It’s a genuine adventure. You don’t need to be a hardcore explorer, but you will thrive if you bring:
An Open Mind: Embracing the unexpected, going a little outside your comfort zone, and enjoying the flow of the journey. 💫
Team Spirit: Sharing space with others in the van, showing mutual respect, and participating in the group vibe. 🤝💚
Basic Mobility: A positive attitude and enough physical fitness to carry your own bag and hop in and out of the van easily.
Our group tours generally host adventurous 20-somethings to young-at-heart travellers in their 60s. There is no strict age limit, but group harmony relies on everyone having a collaborative spirit and matching the trip’s physical demands.
Under 18: Passengers aged 16–17 are welcome if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For families with younger children, we offer specialised Private Family Departures—just get in touch! 👨👩👧👦
Tours rated Easy to Moderate: We happily welcome fit travellers up to their 70s who are comfortable with light walks, stairs, van travel, and occasional camping.
Tours rated Serious: For routes involving demanding high-altitude hikes or remote terrain, we recommend these exclusively for travellers under 60.
Note: We also occasionally launch special edition tours tailored for specific age groups or solo travellers!
Overlanding is an active adventure! 🧗♂️🔥 You should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain, handling tropical heat, and stepping in and out of the minibus. You’ll also need to carry your luggage at times, walk short distances with it, lift it in and out of the van, and occasionally navigate stairs or uneven ground in hotels and campsites.
👉 To help you choose the perfect pace, we use a 1-to-5 Star Fitness Rating system for all our itineraries. For a full breakdown, check our Pre-Departure Information page under the Tour Challenge section.
No worries at all! If a particular trek or activity feels too challenging for you, you can always choose to sit it out, relax at a nearby café, or enjoy the base accommodation. There’s absolutely no pressure—your comfort and safety always come first. ☕🌿
⚠️ Important Notes:
Our crew’s primary focus must remain on the majority of the group and the planned itinerary.
The crew has the responsibility to evaluate everyone’s physical capabilities for certain activities. They may ask someone not to participate if they believe it’s unsafe or risks severely delaying the group. Please respect their decision!
Variety is part of the adventure! Depending on your route, weather can range from tropical jungle heat (up to 40°C / 104°F) to chilly mountain nights (down to 5°C / 41°F). Packing layers is key! ☀️🌧
The Rain: Between July and October, expect short but intense afternoon rain showers.
The Bugs: Mosquitoes are common in coastal and jungle areas. While we prioritise rooms with mosquito nets where needed, common outdoor spaces are open. Just bring a good repellent and light long sleeves for the evenings.
First, keep in mind that our camping is far from extreme! We only camp for a few nights on select routes, provide top-quality gear (like comfy inflatable mattresses and clean liners), and local cabin upgrades are usually available. ⛺✨
However, if you want to skip camping entirely and look for a smoother pace, we offer great alternative options:
Comfort Trails: Exclusively private tours featuring 100% hotel stays, zero camping, and a more relaxed rhythm for your group of friends or family.
Custom Adventures: If you want something fully bespoke, check out our Custom Adventures page! We can tailor-make an overland itinerary from scratch, perfectly adapted to your preferred driving hours, activities, and hotel choices. 🚐✨
We use a handpicked mix of cosy local hotels, community-run eco-lodges, and scenic campsites chosen for their authenticity and local vibe. On our Backpacker’s Editions, we lean more toward budget-friendly hostels and multi-share dorms. We always aim for places with real character! 🏨✨
Not too much! On average, camping makes up about 20% of the trip (ranging from 0% to 35% depending on your itinerary). If you’re new to it, don’t sweat it—we provide all the gear: spacious tents, inflatable mattresses with integrated pillows, and sleeping bags with clean liners. Our crew will show you the ropes and help you set everything up! ⛺🌌
As a general rule, upgrades to private rooms or cabins cannot be officially pre-booked or guaranteed—they are usually handled upon arrival, depending on what’s available. However, feel free to let us know your preferences before the trip.
⚠️ Important: This does not apply to the Single Supplement! If you pay for a Single Supplement when booking your trip, your private room and private tent are 100% guaranteed from day one.
Note: To keep the adventure running smoothly, our priority is always the main group and the planned itinerary. If you’re opting for a room upgrade, you might just need to wait a brief moment for the rest of the group before we sort out your room swap. Thank you for your flexibility! 🤝
Our trips are organised on a twin-share basis. As a solo traveller, you will automatically be paired with another traveller of the same gender, rotating roommates throughout the journey when possible to keep the group dynamic social and inclusive.
If you prefer your own space, you can add the Single Supplement during the booking process. This guarantees your own private hotel room and private tent on camping nights. Note: In a few very remote community stays, private single rooms might not be logistically possible due to limited local infrastructure.
Absolutely! If you book together with a companion, you will automatically be placed in the same room.
Travelling with a friend: You will be assigned a twin room with separate beds.
Travelling with a partner: Let us know at the time of booking if you prefer a double bed. While we cannot guarantee a double bed at every single stop due to local hotel layouts, we will always make every effort to arrange it for you.
Triple rooms are very limited on our routes. By default, two members of your group will share a standard twin room, while the third member will be paired with another solo traveller of the same gender.
💡 Pro-Tip for Trios: A great workaround is for one person in your group to book a Single Supplement. You can split the extra cost equally among the three of you and take turns rotating who gets the private single room each night of the trip!
Note: If you’d rather all stay together or don’t mind sharing a double bed, let us know when booking. We’ll do our best to accommodate you in the same room whenever hotel layouts allow, but please note this does not change the tour price.
Food here is an absolute highlight! 🌮🤤 Our trips give you the freedom to explore local restaurants or join group meals. In remote areas, meals are simpler but always delicious and homemade (think fresh tortillas, eggs, beans, and chicken).
Vegetarians will always find options. If you are vegan or have strict allergies, it can be trickier in remote spots, but let us know when booking, and we’ll help you navigate it. 🌶️🥗
On some routes—especially when camping or hitting the road—we prep a few meals as a team! The crew provides the fresh ingredients and tools, and everyone chips in with chopping, cooking, or washing up. It’s super social, fun, and a great break from restaurant food (expect self-made sandwiches, yoghurt granola bowls, hearty pastas, curries, or veggie stews). Everyone helps with clean-up, too — Teamwork makes the dream work! 🍳🔥
Tap water in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize is not safe to drink. Since the vast majority of our tours travel in our custom van (Lupita), you don’t need to worry—we carry large 20-litre purified water containers so you can refill your bottle for free anytime. This is one of our key steps to drastically reduce plastic waste and keep the planet happy! 💧🌍
If your specific tour uses an alternative vehicle (like a private rental or coach), free water on board is not included. In that case, you’ll just refill at hotels or buy your own along the way. (Feel free to ask our team which vehicle applies to your trip!)
Not everywhere. While many of our city hotels do have A/C, it is not guaranteed in remote areas or immersive community eco-lodges. In those warmer, humid spots, accommodations are equipped with fans to keep things comfortable. 🌀
Yes, regularly! Our van features USB charging ports on every row to power your devices while moving. Additionally, hotels and campsites have standard 120V power outlets, which use the standard American plug system. 🔌
You will generally have Wi-Fi access at least every two days at our accommodations, though sometimes it’s only available in common areas.
For constant connectivity, we highly recommend getting an eSIM (like Airalo or Yesim) or a local SIM card upon arrival.
Yes! You’ll have access to laundry facilities every few days through local laundromats or hotel services. On some of our more remote routes, it might take up to 7 days between laundry stops, so packing enough basics is wise. We also provide basic washing gear if you need to hand-wash a few things while camping. 🧺
Generally, yes! All three countries are welcoming and safe for tourists, and travelling with an experienced local crew significantly reduces any inherent travel risks. While government travel advisories are naturally very cautious, the vast majority of travellers explore these regions with zero issues.
To keep your journey smooth, just use common travel sense: keep your valuables secure, stay aware of your surroundings in crowded markets, avoid poorly lit streets at night, and always communicate openly with your crew if you ever feel uncomfortable.
👉 To read about the security measures we take as a company, visit our website’s Safety & Security page. For your own practical, on-the-ground safety tips, don’t worry—we will send you our detailed En Route Info document right before your trip!
Your safety is our absolute priority. We don’t just guide; we protect through strict protocols and deep local knowledge:
No Night Driving: We strictly travel during daylight hours. Plus, our short driving days (averaging 4 hours) mean our crew stays 100% fresh and alert. 🚫🌙
Real-Time Monitoring: We cross-check official advisories and monitor local community networks to adapt instantly to any road changes. 🗺️📡
The Vehicle: Our custom van features real-time GPS tracking, a dashcam, and full passenger medical insurance under official SCT regulations. 🚐🔒
Dual First-Aid Kits: We carry two fully stocked medical kits—one fixed in the van and a portable one for hikes. 🩹🎒
Expert Crew: Our main drivers hold official Bus Licenses and have years of global overland experience. Our tour leaders excel at managing remote logistics, translation, and local emergency support if any health issue arises. 🧑✈️💼
Yes, comprehensive medical travel insurance is 100% mandatory for all travellers. Before joining the group, you must provide your policy number and your provider’s 24-hour emergency contact number.
Your policy must cover:
⚠️ Note on Credit Card or Annual Insurance: We accept these providers, but you must carefully check your policy’s fine print. Standard credit card insurance often excludes overland travel, remote medical evacuation, or specific adventure activities. Make sure your coverage is fully valid for our exact destinations.
While some hotels offer safe boxes, we generally don’t recommend them, as it is incredibly easy to forget your belongings when checking out. Instead, our custom van features an onboard safe for your most important documents and backup cash. Your crew will explain the access protocols on day one. Note: While we take every precaution to secure the vehicle, your personal belongings are ultimately your responsibility.
There are currently no mandatory vaccinations required to enter Mexico, Guatemala, or Belize. However, routine travel immunisations such as Hepatitis A, Tetanus, and Typhoid are strongly recommended for this region. 💉
Because health planning must be done well in advance, we highly recommend visiting a travel clinic or consulting your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks before your departure date.
Yes, we carry two first-aid kits—one fixed in the van and a portable one for hikes—ready for basic cuts, scratches, or minor needs. 🩹🎒
However, you must bring any personal or prescription medication you may require. Please ensure you pack a sufficient supply for the entire duration of the trip, as some of our routes pass through remote areas where specific brands or specialised medical supplies are impossible to find! 💊
Don’t panic—you are in safe hands! If you ever feel unwell, just let your crew know immediately. 🩺
For basic illnesses (like a cold or diarrhoea): We highly recommend visiting the doctors located at local pharmacies. It is a very easy, convenient, and inexpensive way to get sorted with effective medicine on the spot, and your crew can accompany you to translate! 💊
To protect the group: If you have a respiratory illness, we will just ask you to wear a mask inside the van (we provide free masks on board). 😷
For emergencies: We excel at handling remote logistics and getting you to the nearest quality clinic or hospital, while your mandatory travel insurance coordinates the medical coverage. 🚑
If any member of the group becomes ill or injured during the trip, the Lupita Overland crew will provide necessary support and assistance. They may arrange for a visit to a local doctor or medical facility if needed. 🧑⚕️🚑
The group is expected to be flexible and understanding in such situations, and the affected individual is encouraged to cooperate to recover. Each person should take care of themselves, communicate with the crew if unwell, and follow their recommendations. Denying necessary medical attention may result in the individual being asked to leave the trip. ⚖️
The well-being of all participants is a priority, and by taking care of yourself and following the crew’s advice, you can ensure a positive and safe experience for everyone. 🚐✨
For the vast majority of our trips, we travel on board our main expedition vehicle, Lupita, which is equipped with an onboard fridge. However, we cannot guarantee refrigeration 100% of the time. 🚐❄️
Why? Overland travel requires flexibility. A fridge can occasionally malfunction on bumpy roads, and we may use alternative vehicles (without a fridge) for cross-border logistics, private groups, or larger special tours. Additionally, some remote eco-lodges might lack 24/7 electricity.
What should I do? We highly recommend bringing a personal portable cooling pouch (like a FRIO pack) as a backup so you are always 100% safe, no matter the vehicle or location! 🎒🌡️
Is it safe to eat fresh food and have ice in drinks during the trip?
Generally yes! 🧊🍍 In restaurants and touristy areas, ice is usually made from purified water and is safe to enjoy. Fresh fruits and veggies served in good cafés or restaurants are also fine for most travellers.
That said, when it comes to street food or remote spots, it’s best to play it safe — avoid flavoured ice from stalls, skip salads, and go for cooked or peeled fruits and veggies instead. Better safe than sorry — especially when the adventure’s just getting started! 🌮🌿💦
We do not offer flight booking services for getting to or from the tour’s starting and ending points. You will need to book your international flights independently using search engines.
Pro Tip: Given the unpredictable nature of adventure travel, we advise booking flexible flight tickets or ensuring your travel insurance covers unforeseen schedule changes.
If you are planning extra travel on your own before or after the tour, here are our local tips:
Internal Flights: In Mexico, consider Aeromexico for reliability and comfort, or Volaris for more affordable options (just keep an eye out for possible delays).
Buses: ADO is a highly reputable, first-class bus company for comfortable and easy travel within Mexico.
We sure can! Just select those extras at the time of booking. We can provide options for accommodation in the exact same hotels where the tour begins and ends, ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience.
As part of our service, we are also more than happy to recommend optional activities, restaurants, and attractions for your extra days based on our local knowledge and expertise! 🗺️✨
Itinerary changes: Our group itineraries are fixed to keep things smooth and cannot be altered for individual travellers. (Tip: If you are a group of 6 or more friends, contact us and we can design a fully custom private itinerary just for you!)
Joining late / Leaving early: To maintain great group dynamics, you cannot join a tour days after it begins. You can, however, sign off early if needed, though unused portions won’t be reimbursed.
Section options: Our longer tours (20+ days) are thoughtfully designed so they can be divided into shorter ~10-day legs that start/end in towns with airports, making it super convenient to join or depart.
For Group Tours, full payment is required 60 days before your tour departure date. Don’t worry about missing it—we will email you a friendly reminder a week before the due date so you have plenty of time to organise your transfer or card payment! ✉️🚀
Note: If you book a group trip that departs in less than 60 days, full payment is required at the time of booking. For Private Tours, your specific payment timeline will be outlined in your confirmation.
During the booking process, you can choose between two secure payment methods:
Bank Transfer (Recommended): Zero extra fees! 💸 Once you book, you will receive a confirmation email with a direct link to our payment page containing precise transfer instructions based on your local currency. 🌍🏦
Credit/Debit Card via Stripe: Fast and secure, but please note it incurs a small processing surcharge (+3.5%). (Heads up: American Express is only accepted for USD accounts, and Mexican cards are usually incompatible with the online system—if you have a Mexican card, please choose the bank transfer option!) 🇺🇸🇲🇽
⚠️ Payment Unsuccessful? If your card transaction fails, it is usually due to connection issues, incorrect details, or your bank blocking an international charge for security. Check your bank app, try switching to the bank transfer option, or reach out to [email protected] so we can save your seat! 🆘🚀
To keep things 100% transparent, our Group Expeditions are organised into distinct categories on our website menu:
If we cancel: Since you only pay once a trip is opened for booking or guaranteed, cancellations from our side are extremely rare. In the unlikely event we must cancel a booked tour due to circumstances beyond our control, we will contact you immediately. You will always have the choice to switch to alternative dates, keep the payment as credit, or receive a refund.
We understand that plans can change! If you need to cancel, change your travel dates, or transfer your spot to a friend, the lead booker must notify us in writing via email at [email protected].
Your options and any associated fees depend entirely on how far in advance you notify us (the magic cutoff is usually 60 days before departure).
For the exact breakdown of credits, transfer fees, and cancellation percentages, please read the Cancellations & Transfers section in our full Booking Conditions.
(Pro tip: We highly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking to cover unexpected cancellation fees!) 🛡️
Unfortunately, we cannot refund the price difference. Tour prices fluctuate based on demand and seasonality, and by booking, you secure your spot at the agreed price at that time. To claim a new sale price, you would need to cancel your current booking (forfeiting your non-refundable deposit or credit) and re-book, which usually does not work out in your favour.
At this moment (2026), no—unless your specific tour page explicitly states otherwise!
However, we are currently in the process of introducing a Local Community Fund across our tours. This will be a specific amount paid in local cash to your Tour Leader on Day 1.
Why are we implementing this? Because it allows us to put cash directly into the hands of remote indigenous guides, family-run eateries, and community projects where card payments are impossible, bypassing high corporate fees and intermediaries.
Most importantly, a life-changing experience! And apart from that, many more activities, meals, and better hotels than other companies!
Included: Overland transport, twin-share accommodation, meals mentioned as included in your itinerary (typically around 40%), 2 Lupita crew members (for 7+ traveller groups), local guides & their tips, plus all activities listed in the itinerary.
Not Included: Flights, airport transfers, travel insurance, visas, optional activities, extra hotel nights, restaurant meals/drinks not listed as included in your itinerary, crew tips (never expected, but always appreciated!), contingency expenses and personal spending. Always check your specific Tour Itinerary page for the exact breakdown!
Daily Budget: Expect to spend around $10 to $40 USD per day on optional activities, drinks, souvenirs, laundry, and extra meals.
Contingency Fund: While rare, emergencies happen. We highly recommend having access to at least $500 USD in your bank account for unexpected situations.
It is highly recommended to use a combination of both! ⚖️
Cards: Best used in larger cities at established restaurants and shops, or for larger bills, roughly equivalent to $25 USD or more. 💳
Cash: Essential for small daily expenses, street food, and purchases in smaller towns where cards are rarely accepted. 🌮
Currency: You should pay for these small expenses in the local currency, with one exception: in Belize, USD cash is widely accepted and commonly used! 💵🇧🇿
Withdrawing local currency directly from ATMs is the easiest option! 🏧 There is no need to stress about bringing stacks of cash from home.
ATMs: They are widely available, and the final cost is usually similar to using an exchange house. We’ll give you tips on the best ones to use in your En-route Information Document! 💸
Pro Tip: Always select “No” when the ATM asks to apply its own exchange rate to avoid hidden conversion fees. 🛑
Arrival Peace of Mind (Exchanging Cash): If you are nervous about ATMs, arriving late, or worried your card might not work right away, we recommend bringing some cash to exchange at the airport upon arrival (around $100–$200 USD is more than enough!).
Notify your bank: Let them know your travel dates and destinations so they don’t block your cards for suspicious foreign activity! 📞
Bring a backup: Always travel with at least two different cards (kept in separate places) just in case one gets lost or blocked. 🎒
Tour prices are based on strict group rates paid in advance. As per our Booking Conditions, no refunds are given for unused sections, activities, or accommodations once the tour has started.
Tipping is never obligatory, but it is a great way to show appreciation for excellent service! 🙏 Follow your budget and possibilities.
Local Guides (Included Activities): A standard tip is already covered in your tour price! 🎟️ You don’t need to tip separately, but you are always welcome to give a little extra individually if you loved their service.
Lupita Crew: Tips for your overland crew are not included. If they made your trip unforgettable, a standard guideline is $2 to $6 USD per day, per crew member. 🚐
Restaurants & Bars: A 10% tip is standard if you are happy with the service. 🌮
Hotels & Luggage: Roughly $0.50–$2 USD in local currency is customary for bellboys or housekeepers. 🧳
For a full breakdown—including how to tip in Mexico vs. Belize/Guatemala, advice on street vendors, and how we organise the crew tips at the end of the trip—please read our comprehensive Tipping Guide.
The golden rule of overlanding is simple: pack light and stay flexible! 👕 Since you’ll be moving frequently, bring comfortable clothes you can layer, sturdy shoes, and eco-friendly toiletries.
You will find a comprehensive, item-by-item Packing List directly on your specific tour page and also at the Pre-Departure Information page.
Please note that space in our overland vehicles is limited, and you will be responsible for carrying your own bags up hotel stairs or across streets. 🚐
Luggage Limit: Your main bag should not exceed 18 kg (40 lbs) and 75 × 30 × 30 cm (30 × 12 × 12 in). If you love souvenirs, leave extra space or plan to ship items home.
Suitcases: Please try to avoid suitcases! 🛑 They can easily get scratched or damaged in transit, are difficult to carry upstairs, and will normally be packed under other bags.
The Best Option: We highly recommend a soft duffle bag or a backpack, plus a small daypack for your daily essentials and water bottle. 🎒
If your tour includes camping nights, there is no need to bring heavy gear—we’ve got you covered! 🏕️ We provide:
A tent with a mosquito net (shared between two people).
A 15ºC sleeping bag with a freshly cleaned liner.
An ultra-light inflatable mattress with an integrated pillow.
What you should bring: The only thing we don’t include is a headlamp or torch 🔦 (your phone flashlight works, but a headlamp is much more convenient). (Note: If you are joining a Northern Mexico trip where nights can get chilly, you are welcome to bring a warmer sleeping bag for extra comfort!). ❄️
For most nationalities, a visa is not required for tourism in Mexico, Belize, or Guatemala! 🛂 However, it is entirely your responsibility to check the specific requirements for your passport with the respective embassies before departure.
The Golden Rule: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay and have enough blank pages for stamps. 📖
Border Fees: Entry and exit taxes at land borders are not included in your tour price. We recommend carrying some cash for this, as card payments are sometimes not available at the border posts. 💵
Need help? We can provide an invitation letter for your visa application if required.
For full details, please check the Logistics section on your Pre-Departure Information page.
Border regulations and fees can change without notice, so always verify the most up-to-date information with your embassy. Here is a general overview of what to expect at land crossings:
🇲🇽 Mexico: You will need a Tourist Card (FMM) or a clear passport stamp. A migratory tax (DNR) applies. If you flew into Mexico, this is usually already included in your airline ticket (keep your flight receipt to prove it!). If entering by land, expect to pay around 800 MXN (or the USD equivalent) at the border.
🇧🇿 Belize: Most visitors are granted a 30-day stay. When exiting Belize by land, there is a mandatory departure fee of approximately $30 USD (or 60 BZD).
🇬🇹 Guatemala: Most visitors get a 90-day stay. Immigration may ask to see proof of an onward/exit flight. A small exit fee (around 10-20 GTQ) sometimes applies at land borders.
We are a digital-first and eco-friendly company, so there is no need to print thick stacks of travel vouchers! 🌿
Pre-Departure Information: You can access this comprehensive guide at any time directly on our website to help you pack and prepare. 💻
WhatsApp Group: A few days before your trip begins (or on Day 1 at the latest), we will add you to a group chat with your Lupita crew and fellow travellers! 📱
Schedules & Guides: We will send your daily Trip Schedule and the detailed En-route Information document directly to the WhatsApp group.
Printed Copies: To save paper, we only keep one shared physical copy of the schedule and guides in the van for everyone to check during the journey. 🚐
We typically do not arrange private airport transfers (except for Belize and Chiapas!), as the best and most cost-effective method depends highly on your arrival city. 🛑
Instead, we highly recommend the following efficient and safe options for our main starting points:
🇲🇽 Mexico City (MEX): You can use Uber, but be aware that airport WiFi is famously unreliable, and depending on your terminal, you may have to walk outside the airport grounds to meet your driver. The easiest alternative is an Official Airport Taxi. Go to the secure kiosks inside the arrivals hall, compare prices between a few, and always ask for a standard/shared option to avoid being upsold to an expensive “luxury” private service. 🚕
🏖️ Cancún (CUN): Pre-book an official shared van on www.bookaway.com for fair pricing ($10–$20 USD). If you are travelling in a group of 3 or 4, booking a private taxi through the same platform might actually be cheaper and faster! 🚐
🌿 Chiapas (TGZ to San Cristobal/Chiapa de Corzo): Official airport taxis are readily available and very safe. Simply buy a ticket at the official kiosks inside the terminal, which have fixed rates. However, if you prefer absolute peace of mind and want a driver waiting for you, we can pre-organise this transfer for you for a small management fee. Just contact us in advance! 🚙
🇧🇿 Belize City (BZE): We do offer this! When you book your tour with us, you can select our arrival transfer add-on. We will arrange your transport from the airport straight to the ferry terminal and your hotel in Caye Caulker. 🚤
🇬🇹 Guatemala City (GUA to Antigua): Uber is highly recommended, very safe, and costs around $30–$45 USD per car. If you are travelling solo, look for the Shared Shuttle kiosks right at the airport exit (around $15–$20 USD per person). 🌋
Pro Tip: No matter the airport, always pay at official kiosks or through secure apps, and never accept rides from random drivers soliciting inside or outside the terminal! 🛑 Additionally, do not feel pressured to tip airport transfer drivers. Especially in Cancún, some drivers can be very pushy and demand large tips, but tipping for this specific service is neither required nor expected. Keep your boundaries firm! 🙅♂️
Standard hotel check-in times are usually between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM. 🏨
We cannot guarantee or request early check-ins. If you arrive early, you can safely store your luggage at the hotel reception and explore the area until your room is ready! 🎒 If you have an early morning flight and absolutely need a room waiting for you upon arrival, the only way to guarantee this is to contact us to book a night of pre-accommodation or try a half-day rate.
The adventure officially kicks off on Day 1 with our Welcome Meeting! 👋
When: The exact time is listed in your trip itinerary. Don’t worry, we will also send you a reminder via email and our WhatsApp group! ⏰
Where: Usually held in the lobby, patio, or rooftop of your starting hotel. We will confirm the exact spot via WhatsApp and/or a notice at the hotel reception. 📍
Why it matters: This is a crucial get-together where you will meet your Lupita crew, connect with your fellow travellers, and go over all the exciting plans for the days ahead! 🗺️
It depends entirely on the stop and the season! 🌊 While many spots on our routes are perfect for swimming, others (especially along the open Pacific Coast) feature heavy surf that makes swimming unsafe.
But no worries, we will always balance it out by taking you to nearby sheltered coves where you can safely enjoy the ocean. 🏖️ Your tour leader knows the coast perfectly and will always guide you to the safest and most beautiful swimming spots available on your specific itinerary!
When people think of Belize, they usually imagine endless white sandy beaches, but the reality on the islands (cayes) is quite different! 🇧🇿
The Reality of the Beaches: Most islands in Belize don’t have traditional sandy, walk-in beaches. If you are looking for long stretches of sand to lie on, Mexico is far superior.
How Swimming Works Here: In Caye Caulker (our main sea stop in Belize), swimming is all about “The Split”! This is a vibrant, deep-water channel with a seawall and diving platforms where everyone hangs out, listens to music, and jumps straight into the crystal-clear water! 🏊♂️
The Real Jewel (Snorkelling): What Belize lacks in sand, it more than makes up for underwater. The marine life and coral health here are absolutely world-class. The boat snorkelling trips out to the Belize Barrier Reef (swimming with nurse sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles) will easily be one of the absolute highlights of your entire tour! 🦈🐢
The Caribbean coast is paradise, but it has its rules:
Sargassum (Seaweed): Unpredictable. It’s more common from May to September, but during our peak dry season (November to March), the beaches are usually pristine and clear! 🌊
Riviera Maya & Tulum: Yes, some areas are overcrowded with expensive beach clubs. However, we know the coast inside out! We avoid the tourist traps and take you to the access points. 🏝️
Our Seaweed Backup: If we ever hit a bad seaweed week, don’t worry! We know the absolute best alternative swimming spots in the region, including stunning inland lagoons and crystal-clear cenotes that offer perfect, seaweed-free water all year round. 🏊♂️
Anytime is a good time to explore, but the landscapes and vibes change completely depending on the season:
☀️ November to March (Peak Season): This is the ideal time for dry, cooler, and highly comfortable weather across all three countries. It’s also the most vibrant time, aligning with major cultural highlights like Mexico’s Día de los Muertos.
🔥 April to May (Late Dry Season): A great time to travel, but be prepared for scorching heat, especially in lowland and coastal areas. The landscape can look quite dry and dusty during these months.
🌿 June to October (Green/Rainy Season): Expect frequent, heavy afternoon showers. The massive upside? The rain cools down the air (making mornings beautiful), prices are lower, crowds are thinner, and the countryside becomes incredibly lush, green, and full of life!
A note on temperatures: Weather varies dramatically by altitude. You might experience a chilly 5°C (40°F) in the Guatemalan or Mexican highlands and a sweltering 40°C (100°F) on the coast during the same trip. Packing layers is key! 🧥👕
