The Journey to Lupita

A story of discovering Mexico and finding my true calling on the road

Hola! My name is Jaime, and I’m Lupita’s founder. The story of Lupita is closely tied to my own life journey over the last decade, and it all started with a search for something more fulfilling.

It all started in Chiapas…

After working hard in my first job as an engineer in Spain, I felt a bit empty and needed a more adventurous life. I decided to travel out of Europe for the first time. My destination was Chiapas, a Mexican state rich in indigenous culture.

Previously, in Spain, I took a course to learn about the history, current political and human rights situations, and appropriate behaviours so I could become a human rights watcher for the Zapatista communities. I wanted to learn about alternative ways of living, and I thought these communities were the best place in the world to do so.

A Life-Changing Perspective

Chiapas has been the most extraordinary, mind-opening experience of my whole life. It completely changed my way of seeing the world. After one year as a human rights watcher, I came to understand that the most interesting aspect of these people wasn’t just their political journey but their “cosmology”—their unique appreciation of time and space.

These people own a real treasure greater than anything material: extraordinary wisdom that the Western world seems to have forgotten, and a self-dignity almost impossible to find in our home countries.

From Engineer to Overland Leader & Driver

Something “clicked” in my mind during my time in Chiapas. After working one more year as an engineer in Mexico City, I decided to change my career entirely and dedicate myself to the adventure travel industry. I wanted to show the rest of the world those wonders and ways of thinking.

Being a foreigner in Mexico with no experience didn’t make things easy at first, but I was very lucky. I was hired by one of the world’s leading and most legendary British overland expedition companies. After a rigorous training process, I finally had the awesome chance of becoming a Tour Leader and Driver, running epic routes all around the globe!

While leading tours around the Americas and Asia for four years, I acquired numerous skills that became the foundation for Lupita. I’ll always remember those times as one of my best life experiences. The friends I made and the epic journeys I experienced were truly out of this world.

The Birth of Lupita

The idea of creating something unique for Mesoamerica began developing years ago. Finally, in 2018, I started working full-time on bringing Lupita to life, officially beginning operations in 2022.

To be completely honest, it hasn’t been an easy road, especially from an economic perspective. Building an independent overland project from scratch brings constant challenges, but we keep pushing forward with the same passion and excitement as Day 1. We are infinitely grateful to our family, friends, and the incredible travellers who have backed us and believed in this dream from the very beginning.

Our purpose remains unchanged: we want to show the world the extraordinary cultures, people, and nature of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize through authentic overland expeditions, while ensuring our travels directly support and give back to the local communities that host us.

Come feel the wild heart of Mesoamerica with us.

You’re only here once. Make it epic!
