🇧🇿 The Belize Adventure: Begin by unwinding on the tropical island of Caye Caulker 🏝️ before diving into Garifuna culture with an immersive drumming experience at Hopkins. Next, encounter diverse wildlife at Belize’s Tropical Education Centre, and deepen the adrenaline by venturing into the mystical ATM Crystal Maiden Cave 💀 hidden deep within the lush Cayo jungle.
🇬🇹 The Guatemala Expedition: Cross the border to discover the towering ancient ruins of Tikal 🛕, the serene Petén Itzá Lake, and the colourful island of Flores. Journey onward through the turquoise limestone pools of Semuc Champey 🌊, wander the vibrant Mayan market and ceremonies of Chichicastenango 🎨, and soak in the breathtaking volcanic views of Lake Atitlán. Your expedition concludes in the colonial jewel of Antigua, with optional high-altitude ascents of the majestic Acatenango or Pacaya volcanoes 🌋.
Once you check into our hostel on Caye Caulker, embrace the island’s “Go Slow” mantra! Depending on your arrival time, you can head to “The Split” for a swim or grab a cocktail at the island’s most iconic hangout. 🍹🌊
At 4:30 PM, we will gather for an essential Welcome Meeting to review the route and answer any questions. Right after, we’ll join the rest of the expedition crew (who are already on the road!) for a Welcome Dinner to celebrate the start of this epic Belize and Guatemala leg together. 🍽️✨
Today is all about the vibrant underwater world of Caye Caulker. We’ll kick off with an amazing snorkel tour to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where you can swim alongside nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and manatees amidst colourful coral formations. 🦈🐢🐚
In the afternoon, lean into the island’s “Go Slow” mantra. You can cool off with a swim and a drink at the island’s most iconic seaside hangout, or join an optional tubing tour. 🏝️🍹🍻
After a final boat ride back to the mainland, we’ll journey to the coastal village of Hopkins, known as the heart of the Garifuna culture. Here, the rhythm of life changes as we dive into a deep cultural immersion. You’ll learn the art of traditional drumming, move to the local beats with a dance session, and even try your hand at Garifuna cooking for a true taste of the village. 🥥🔥🕺
Our day begins with a visit to Belize’s Tropical Education Centre. This isn’t just a zoo; it’s a sanctuary for over 200 animals—including jaguars, tapirs, and tropical birds—that were orphaned or rescued. It’s the perfect introduction to the wildlife that makes Belize so unique. 🐾🐆
In the afternoon, we settle into the lush grounds of Lower Dover. You’re free to explore this hidden gem at your own pace: trek through the on-site Mayan ruins, or take a refreshing dip in the river that snakes through the property. 🏛️💧🌺
Today, we venture into the legendary ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal), a site so sacred and preserved that it feels like stepping back in time. Your journey begins with a trek through the jungle and a short swim into the cave’s mouth. From there, you’ll navigate water-filled chambers and limestone passages to reach the main cathedral, where ancient Mayan pottery and the sparkling, crystallised remains of the “Crystal Maiden” await. 🌿🏊♂️🏺
Note: This is an adventurous activity. You can read this article to better understand the physical requirements. If this seems too challenging, please let us know in advance so we can arrange an alternative.
Today, we cross the border into Guatemala and head to the charming island of Flores, nestled in the turquoise waters of Lake Petén Itzá. This colourful town is a labyrinth of cobblestone streets and pastel-colored buildings. After we settle in, the afternoon is yours to embrace the lakeside pace—stroll along the malecon, jump into the serene lake for a swim, or simply enjoy the tropical breeze. 🚤✨
Set your alarms! Very early this morning, we venture deep into the emerald heart of the jungle to uncover Tikal, Guatemala’s most jaw-dropping Mayan site. As the rainforest wakes up to the sound of howler monkeys, you’ll explore towering temples that pierce the canopy and sprawling plazas where ancient kings once ruled. With our expert guide, you’ll dive into the history of this “City of Voices” and climb the pyramids for views that are truly out of this world. 🦜✨
After returning from the jungle, the afternoon is yours to recover and lean back into the lakeside pace. Stroll the colourful Malecón, take a refreshing dip in Lake Petén Itzá, or hop on a boat to Jorge’s Rope Swing for one last splash before the sun sets. 🌅🚤
Prepare for a true adventure traveller’s transit day. We’ll depart very early to begin our journey through the lush, emerald mountains of Guatemala toward the remote village of Lanquín. 🌿🎧
Our home for the night is a rustic lodge perched right on the Lanquín River. After a day on the road, there’s nothing better than a cold drink with a view of the misty jungle peaks before we enjoy a group dinner together. 🍹⛰️
Today, we discover why the long journey was worth it as we dive into the wonders of Semuc Champey. Hidden deep in the jungle, this natural monument features a 300-meter limestone bridge with a series of stepped, turquoise pools perfect for a refreshing swim. 🌿🏊♂️
For the best perspective, hike up to El Mirador for a breathtaking panoramic view of the pools tucked into the steep valley below. If you’re craving more adrenaline, you can venture into the K’an Ba Cave to navigate its chambers by candlelight, take a thrilling tube ride down the Cahabón River, or test your nerves on the river swing! 🔦🌊
Today we’ll head deep into the Guatemalan highlands toward the world-famous town of Chichicastenango. Our journey takes us through misty pine forests and windy roads as the landscape shifts from coffee plantations to high-altitude cornfields. 🌽🌲
We arrive in “Chichi” in the afternoon, just as the locals begin preparing for the next day’s market. 🌈✨
This morning is a sensory explosion at the Chichicastenango Market. We’ll explore the vibrant stalls, visit the historic Santo Tomás Church, and walk to Pascual Abaj, a sacred hilltop site where ancient Mayan rituals and Shamanic ceremonies still take place today. 🕯️🙏 In the afternoon, we drive to Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán. Enjoy the sunset, admiring the three volcanoes that tower over the lake. 🌅🍹
We kick off the morning with a boat ride across the sparkling waters of Lake Atitlán to reach the Lower Mayan Trail. We’ll hike along the lakeside cliffs, taking in some of the most iconic views of the surrounding volcanoes. After the trek, enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake’s crystal-clear water. 🏊♂️⛵
Next, we’ll hop in local tuk-tuks to visit Amigos de Santa Cruz, an inspiring NGO vocational centre. We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at their culinary school restaurant and learn how this organisation empowers the local community. We return to Panajachel in the afternoon for a relaxing evening. 🥗🎨
After breakfast, we leave the lake behind and drive toward the stunning UNESCO World Heritage city of Antigua. We’ll arrive just in time for a colonial-style lunch before heading out on an introductory afternoon stroll. 👣
We’ll wander through the iconic cobblestone streets, visiting the famous Santa Catalina Arch and the ruins of grand cathedrals. As the sun sets, we’ll gather for a final Group Farewell Dinner to toast to an unforgettable journey. 🥂🥘
As our adventure wraps up, we want to thank you for being part of this incredible journey through the Maya world. Whether you’re heading home or continuing your travels, we hope you carry a piece of Central America’s magic with you.
Extend your adventure with extra nights in Antigua Guatemala, where you can embark on guided treks to the majestic Pacaya or Acatenango Volcano for an unforgettable finale. Please carefully read this article before making your decision on whether or not to do the Acatenango Trek.
If you’re looking for an active experience that is accessible to almost everyone, the Pacaya Volcano hike is the perfect choice. This guided trek is much shorter and less steep than Acatenango, winding through lush pine forests before opening up to a stark, otherworldly lunar landscape of dried lava fields. 🌑 While you won’t see rivers of flowing lava today, you’ll visit natural fumaroles (steam vents) where you can roast marshmallows over the volcanic rock! ☁️🔥
After the hike, we return to Antigua for a free afternoon. Use this time to explore the city’s hidden gems. ⛪🏙️

Embark on a thrilling 2-day trek to the majestic Acatenango Volcano! This challenging adventure takes you up to 4,000 meters, offering breathtaking views of the volcanic landscape and the erupting Volcán de Fuego. With a steep full-day hike of over 13 km, be prepared for a physically demanding journey (a minimum of 4 hours hiking up and 2 hours down, on difficult terrain), especially since nighttime temperatures can drop to around 0ºC.
We partner with trusted companies to ensure a safe and memorable trek. Make sure to pack appropriate gear or rent what you need before the tour starts (while these items can also be rented, we encourage you to bring at least a pair of good hiking boots):
🌿 Expectations vs. Reality: Acatenango Trail Updates: If you’ve been researching this epic trek online, you might have seen people sleeping in wooden cabins or hiking right up to the Fuego crater. Please note that local authorities (CONAP and Civil Protection) currently prohibit both to protect the delicate volcanic ecosystem and ensure your safety. While some groups may occasionally bypass these rules, we strictly prioritise your well-being and the environment by following official guidelines! ⛺ Under current regulations, we stay in high-quality mountain tents (fully set up in advance—no heavy lifting for you!) and watch the spectacular eruptions safely from our base camp. Should official rules change in the future, we’ll happily adapt, but for now, Base Camp remains the ultimate front-row seat! 🌋✨
Get ready for an exhilarating adventure as we begin our climb! Early this morning, our guides will pick you up and drive to the trailhead. We’ll tackle the first leg of the ascent—a challenging 4 to 5-hour hike through changing microclimates until we reach our base camp perched on the mountainside. 🥾☁️
From camp, you’ll have a safe, front-row seat to the spectacular eruptions of the neighbouring Volcán de Fuego. We’ll spend the night in our pre-set mountain tents, staying warm and resting up for our final push to the summit at dawn. 🌌🔥
Rise and shine for the final push! We’ll wake up in the pre-dawn darkness for a 1.5 to 2-hour hike to the summit of Acatenango. Reaching the peak at 4,000 meters just as the sun begins to rise is a truly life-changing experience. You’ll have panoramic views of the entire Guatemalan highland volcanic chain right in front of you. 📸🧡
After taking in the scenery and celebrating the summit, we’ll head back to base camp for a quick breakfast and to pack up. The descent back to the park entrance takes about 3 hours. We’ll return to Antigua in the early afternoon, giving you a well-deserved afternoon to rest, enjoy a hot shower, and explore the city at your own pace. ☕🏨

This adventure is rated as Moderate. It is a perfect blend of active exploration and relaxation, but it requires an adventurous spirit, a good fitness level, and a love for the outdoors.
🥾 Hiking & Terrain: You should be comfortable walking on uneven ground, navigating high stone steps at Mayan ruins, and climbing into our overland truck. Specific activities like the ATM Cave or the optional Acatenango Volcano trek can be physically strenuous.
🏊 Water Comfort: Since we visit stunning rivers, limestone pools, and tropical islands, being comfortable in the water and knowing how to swim is highly recommended.
☀️ Climate & Bags: Expect tropical heat and humidity in Belize and Petén. Also, you must be capable of carrying your own luggage for short distances (like from the truck to your hotel room or onto island water taxis). 🧳🛶
Recommended Arrival Airport: Belize City International Airport (BZE). 🇧🇿
Arrival Airport Transfer: To get to our joining hotel on Caye Caulker, you will need to take a taxi from BZE airport to the Belize City water taxi terminal, and then a ferry to the island. 🚕🛥️ To avoid any hassle with local drivers and ferry tickets, we highly recommend adding our Pre-arranged Airport-to-Island Transfer Service ($60 USD per person) during your booking process.

Welcome Meeting & Dinner: We officially kick off the expedition with an essential Welcome Meeting at 4:30 PM at the hostel’s reception on Day 1, followed immediately by our Welcome Dinner. 🍽️✨ Please ensure your flight and ferry timings allow you to arrive at the accommodation before 5:00 PM.
🏨 Last Night Included / Tour Ends: At our ending hotel, located in the heart of Antigua Guatemala. 🇬🇹
✈️ Recommended Departure Airport: La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City.
🚐 Departure Airport Transfer: To get from Antigua to the GUA airport, we highly recommend booking a shared shuttle van directly through our hotel front desk upon arrival. Alternatively, a private taxi can be arranged for around $50 USD. 🚖
Our expedition runs during the dry season (November to May) for the most comfortable travel conditions. However, Mesoamerica is a great year-round destination with unique vibes in every season, and because our route crosses drastically different altitudes, your weather will vary more by where we are than by when we go.
🍂 November to March: The core dry season. Cooler, crisp air is ideal for long days of exploring.
🔥 April to May: Late dry season. Great weather, but expect intense heat in the lowlands.
🌿 June to October: The green/rainy season. Expect heavy afternoon showers, but also fewer crowds and incredibly lush landscapes.
🌴 Jungle & Coast (Lowlands): Warm and tropical year-round. Highs around 35°C (90°F)—and up to 40°C (100°F) in April/May. Perfect for cenotes and beaches! 🤿
⛰️ Highlands: Spring-like days around 25°C (80°F), but crisp nights dropping to 10°C (50°F). 🥾
🌋 Acatenango Volcano Note: If you join the optional overnight trek, be ready for true alpine freezing temperatures dropping to 0°C (30°F). ❄️
(Check out our altitude and temperature breakdown chart below to pack like a pro!) ↓

An incredible trip.
Thanks to Lupita for a truly amazing journey through Belize and Guatemala. Thanks to Jamie we were able to sample their unique history, culture landscapes and people. Lupita organised amazing activities, snorkeling with sharks, hiking Mayan trails and unforgettable accommodation ranging from posh Beach Huts, Jungle Lodges, Colonial Hotels and stays on archaeological sites.
We have just returned from a group holiday with friends exploring Belize and Guatemala Jaimie led the tour and travelled with us . I cannot thank him enough . An amazing tour leader and thoroughly lovely human . He planned us a wonderful trip working with Helen from Firecrest Travel . Jaimie was attentive to everyone’s needs and passionate about the places we visited He went out of his way to ensure that everything went smoothly and that we experienced the local culture using excellent local guides and supporting local charities .
We could not have asked for more and will definitely travel with him again . In fact we would travel the world with him!
Beyond expectations
We had the best holiday travelling through Belize and Guatemala with Lupita. Largely due to Jaime’s extensive knowledge of the area and professional guidance; sensitively combining the needs of local communities and our needs. All in keeping with their responsible tourism ethos
Both country’s were amazing and we liked the combination of cultural and wildlife/nature experiences offered throughout the trip. Swimming with sharks in Caye Caulker, the Rio Dolce river trip and Tikal were amongst our highlights. We felt we really got an understanding of both countries.

Fantastic experience for a second time.
Lupita is a small company where nothing is too much trouble. After a fantastic trip travelling Mexico in Feb 2024 we have just returned from a 15 days trip of Belize and Guatemala which was adapted to all nights in local hotels (no camping) for a more mature group! The countries were beautiful and we were so well looked after during our tour. We saw places off the beaten track as well as the well known highlights of the countries. I would unreservedly recommend them for Mexico and Belize/Guatemala.
