Your journey begins in Belize, unwind on the island of Caye Caulker before diving into Garifuna culture with an immersive drumming experience at Palmento Grove. Continue your exploration at Belize’s Tropical Education Centre, where you’ll encounter diverse wildlife. Your expedition concludes in the colonial town of Antigua, with optional ascents of the majestic Acatenango or Pacaya volcanoes.
Once you check into our hostel on Caye Caulker, embrace the island’s “Go Slow” mantra! Depending on your arrival time, you can head to “The Split” for a swim or grab a cocktail at the island’s most iconic hangout. 🍹🌊
At 4:30 PM, we will gather for an essential Welcome Meeting to review the route and answer any questions. Right after, we’ll join the rest of the expedition crew (who are already on the road!) for a Welcome Dinner to celebrate the start of this epic Belize and Guatemala leg together. 🍽️✨
Optional Activities: Swimming at “The Split”. 🏝️
Meals: Not included.
Facilities: Hostel with Wi-Fi; nearby ATM access. 🏨📶
How to get to the island: After landing at Belize City International Airport (BBP), you will need to take a taxi to the water taxi terminal (approx. 30 mins) and then board the ferry to Caye Caulker (approx. 45 mins). Total travel time from the airport to the island is around 2 to 3 hours.
Make it easy: To avoid any hassle with local taxis and ferry tickets, we highly recommend adding our Airport-to-Island Transfer Service ($60 USD per person) when booking. Everything will be pre-arranged by our welcome hotel, taking you seamlessly from the arrivals gate straight to the island.
Today is all about the vibrant underwater world of Caye Caulker. We’ll kick off with an amazing snorkel tour to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, where you can swim alongside nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and manatees amidst colourful coral formations. 🦈🐢🐚
In the afternoon, lean into the island’s “Go Slow” mantra. You can cool off with a swim and a drink at the island’s most iconic seaside hangout, or join an optional tubing tour. 🏝️🍹🍻
After a final boat ride back to the mainland, we’ll journey to the coastal village of Hopkins, known as the heart of the Garifuna culture. Here, the rhythm of life changes as we dive into a deep cultural immersion. You’ll learn the art of traditional drumming, move to the local beats with a dance session, and even try your hand at Garifuna cooking for a true taste of the village. 🥥🔥🕺
Our day begins with a visit to Belize’s Tropical Education Centre. This isn’t just a zoo; it’s a sanctuary for over 200 animals—including jaguars, tapirs, and tropical birds—that were orphaned or rescued. It’s the perfect introduction to the wildlife that makes Belize so unique. 🐾🐆
In the afternoon, we settle into the lush grounds of Lower Dover. You’re free to explore this hidden gem at your own pace: trek through the on-site Mayan ruins, or take a refreshing dip in the river that snakes through the property. 🏛️💧🌺
Today, we venture into the legendary ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal), a site so sacred and preserved that it feels like stepping back in time. Your journey begins with a trek through the jungle and a short swim into the cave’s mouth. From there, you’ll navigate water-filled chambers and limestone passages to reach the main cathedral, where ancient Mayan pottery and the sparkling, crystallised remains of the “Crystal Maiden” await. 🌿🏊♂️🏺

With our expert guide, you’ll dive into the history of this “City of Voices” and climb the pyramids for views that are truly out of this world. 🦜✨
After returning from the jungle, the afternoon is yours to recover and lean back into the lakeside pace. Stroll the colourful Malecón, take a refreshing dip in Lake Petén Itzá, or hop on a boat to Jorge’s Rope Swing for one last splash before the sun sets. 🌅🚤

We arrive in “Chichi” in the afternoon, just as the locals begin preparing for the next day’s market. 🌈✨
This morning is a sensory explosion at the Chichicastenango Market. We’ll explore the vibrant stalls, visit the historic Santo Tomás Church, and walk to Pascual Abaj, a sacred hilltop site where ancient Mayan rituals and Shamanic ceremonies still take place today. 🕯️🙏 In the afternoon, we drive to Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán. Enjoy the sunset, admiring the three volcanoes that tower over the lake. 🌅🍹
We kick off the morning with a boat ride across the sparkling waters of Lake Atitlán to reach the Lower Mayan Trail. We’ll hike along the lakeside cliffs, taking in some of the most iconic views of the surrounding volcanoes. After the trek, enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake’s crystal-clear water. 🏊♂️⛵

After breakfast, we leave the lake behind and drive toward the stunning UNESCO World Heritage city of Antigua. We’ll arrive just in time for a colonial-style lunch before heading out on an introductory afternoon stroll. 👣
We’ll wander through the iconic cobblestone streets, visiting the famous Santa Catalina Arch and the ruins of grand cathedrals. As the sun sets, we’ll gather for a final Group Farewell Dinner to toast to an unforgettable journey. 🥂🥘

Notes on Coordination & Availability:
If you’re looking for an active experience that is accessible to almost everyone, the Pacaya Volcano hike is the perfect choice. This guided trek is much shorter and less steep than Acatenango, winding through lush pine forests before opening up to a stark, otherworldly lunar landscape of dried lava fields. 🌑 While you won’t see rivers of flowing lava today, you’ll visit natural fumaroles (steam vents) where you can roast marshmallows over the volcanic rock! ☁️🔥
After the hike, we return to Antigua for a free afternoon. Use this time to explore the city’s hidden gems. ⛪🏙️
Price: 99 USD (Includes mentioned Accommodation and Activities)
Embark on a thrilling 2-day trek to the majestic Acatenango Volcano! From camp, you’ll have a front-row seat to the eruptions of the neighbouring Volcán de Fuego. If you still have energy, you can opt for the extra hike to get even closer to Fuego’s active ridge. We’ll spend the night in basic cabins, resting up for our final push to the summit at dawn. 🌌🔥

Your tour features a blend of activities and a few longer driving days. You’ll have camping nights and some treks, so a good fitness level and adventurous spirit are important. While no prior experience is required, you should be comfortable with swimming and hiking. Expect to encounter heat and humidity, but you’ll also have opportunities to relax at comfortable hotels and scenic spots.
You’ll need to carry your bags in certain situations, such as from parking to the hotel or onto boats, and be prepared to navigate stairs and high steps at archaeological sites and in the van. Some activities, such as the ATM Cave and the Acatenango Hike (Extension A), can be strenuous and may involve challenging terrain or high altitudes.
The Yucatán Peninsula, Belize, and East Guatemala are fantastic year-round destinations, but the sweet spot for your trip is from November to May. This is when the weather is typically drier, cooler, and less humid, making it ideal for exploring. For the last bit of our tour, the Guatemalan highlands offer pleasant hiking weather, with lows around 10°C and highs of 27°C. For those joining us on the Acatenango volcano, be ready for chilly nights at around 4000m above sea level.

Optionally, you can bring other items such as 1 set of casual clothes for evenings out, a pouch or money belt inside your clothing for extra safety, and a book to read during your vacation.
If you are opting for the Acatenango Trek Extension, make sure to pack appropriate gear. You can also rent what you need before the tour starts:
