The many archaeological sites are one of the best highlights to explore around this area. Additionally, there is a colonial touch and excellent gastronomy in every town we visit. Last but not least, visiting community projects is the best way for a deep understanding of the traditions.
Mayan is the most famous culture in Mesoamerica. With over 4,400 sites throughout southern Mexico and Guatemala, one could spend a whole lifetime exploring.
Apart from this famous civilization, Mesoamerica is rich in amazing ancient cultures. Olmec civilization was the earliest in the Americas, reigning on the east coast of Mexico. In the west, the Zapotecs ruled the area of Oaxaca. Besides, Teotihuacan is a mysterious civilization which preceded the Mexica (or Aztec).
Additionally, the cave paintings and petroglyphs are northern Mexico’s most impressive attractions. These ancient creations are a unique window into the native peoples that occupied the area thousands of years ago.

The Colonial Era in Mexico and Guatemala ranged between 1510 and 1810. Today, there is a colonial touch in almost every town, many of them being UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Our colonial journey, from south to north, begins in Guatemala. Here, the beautiful town of Antigua starts to seduce the moment you arrive. Continuing through southern Mexico, ancient customs coexist with a bohemian atmosphere at San Cristóbal de las Casas. Last but not least, Oaxaca City offers a rich history and excellent gastronomy.
Then, we explore central Mexico, where many of the colonial gems reside. Additionally, a stroll through Mexico City reveals the capital’s history. Finally, the beautiful región of El Bajío is also home to majestic colonial wonders. With its gorgeous architecture, San Miguel de Allende is unmissable for any explorer. And last but not least, Guanajuato is rich in opulent buildings and coloured houses.
The countries we visit are rich in natural resources and tourist attractions. Despite this, there are extreme inequalities between classes, races and genders. This especially applies to rural areas, which suffered great discrimination for centuries.
Moreover, Mesoamerica’s stunning nature is perfect for developing responsible tourism projects. Yet, many times this isn’t the case. Vacationers are often directed to overexploited areas, such as the Riviera Maya. Here, cheap deals for tourists have very high costs for the environment.
Solving these issues will take decades. Yet, many organizations are improving living conditions and preserving nature. During our tours, we are lucky enough to learn about their projects and give a small hand.
Mexico is a country with a rich cultural past and present. The Spanish tried to transform many of the prehispanic traditions into catholic celebrations. Yet, nowadays many festivals are a mix of traditions.
Oaxaca is a unique place to experience amazing festivities. The Día de Muertos is a time when families come together to remember their dead loved ones through music and colourful altars. Moreover, the Guelaguetza is an impressive indigenous dancing, cultural and culinary celebration.
In the state of Veracruz, the Cumbre Tajín festival promotes the culture of the region through workshops and folk concerts. There are also mystic rituals, alternative therapies and traditional games. Finally, Guadalajara celebrates the International Mariachi Festival every summer. During three days, music, along with traditional dance, takes over the whole city.
Due to the diverse microclimates, each region of Mesoamerica has different gastronomy. Yet, three core ingredients make up the basis of most dishes: corn, beans and chilli peppers. In here, you can find some of the world’s best street food and colourful markets. You’ll never be short of options!
Most of our culinary experiences focus on Mexico, with a wide variety of styles. In this country, you can taste yummy seafood and excellent wine in the northwest. Besides, you can eat some tacos and mole to cure the tequila hangover around the central part of the country. Heading south, you can enjoy some chapulines (seasoned grasshoppers) accompanied by the best Mezcal in Oaxaca. And finally, the Yucatán Peninsula offers delicious Mayan delicacies.
Besides, Guatemala‘s gastronomy is also tasty and varied. Throughout our routes, we will explore a local coffee plantation and taste the famous pipián stew. Prepare your paladar for exquisite food while travelling with Lupita!
