Situated in the State of Campeche, Calakmul is one of the largest protected areas in Mexico. The reserve counts with many species of flora and fauna and it’s a paradise for photographers, bird watchers and nature lovers.
Visiting the remains of the ancient Mayan site -located inside the reserve- and hicking through the surrounding lush jungle is an off-the-beaten-path experience, and Lupita one of the few companies including this activity.
While touring around Belize’s imposing mainland, we will explore the Mayan sacrificial site of Actun Tunichil Muknal, which is only accessible after completing a long passage through the jungle and swimming through a cave.
This nature reserve, located in Guatemala, offers great hikes to some stunning lookout points. Moreover, swimming in the tranquil waters of the adjacent lake is a truly relaxing experience! The reserve is just nearby our accommodation, so you while have a free afternoon to explore it on your own.
More than 20 mammal species roam the area, including spider and howler monkeys and white-tailed deers. Birdlife is rich and varied, with the opportunity to spot toucans, woodpeckers and the famous ocellated turkey.
Palenque National Park, which boasts lush Mayan ruins, is home to a huge variety of wildlife, such as the colourful toucan and howling monkeys. The best way to explore this jungle is to hike back from the ruins to our campsite after the visit.
No trip to Guatemala is complete without a visit to Lake Atitlan, described as “the closest thing to Eden on Earth”. The Lower Mayan Trail is the best choice for a full day tour around fern-covered valleys, towering volcanoes and Mayan towns with rich indigenous culture.
