Today’s first destination is Coyoacán, a charming colonial neighbourhood nestled in the city’s southern region. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to explore a bustling market brimming with local delights. Next, we’ll visit the Museo Casa Azul, also known as Frida Kahlo’s House. Step into the colourful world of this iconic artist as you wander through the rooms adorned with her artwork and personal belongings.
Our adventure continues to Xochimilco, where ancient canals and floating gardens await. Today, our journey takes us to Tilcajete, a quaint artisan village nestled near Oaxaca City. Here, we’ll savour a delightful traditional lunch, setting the stage for an exploration of the region’s artistic treasures. Afterwards, we’ll continue our journey to Oaxaca City, where a captivating introductory walk awaits. With each step, the city’s cultural heritage unfurls before your eyes, inviting you to immerse yourself fully in its enchanting atmosphere.
Prepare to step back in time as we embark on a journey to the majestic Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán. Perched atop a hill, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers unparalleled views and a glimpse into the rich history of the Zapotec civilization.
As the afternoon unfolds, immerse yourself in the vibrant spirit of Oaxaca City. Wander through bustling markets, peruse intriguing museums, and treat yourself to the culinary delights of excellent local restaurants. Prepare for a day of awe-inspiring exploration as we embark on an excursion to Hierve el Agua Springs. Nestled amidst the rugged sierras, these natural wonders beckon with breathtaking beauty. Enjoy a guided hike and take a refreshing dip in the infinity pools!
After a delightful traditional lunch, we return to Oaxaca City. Spend the afternoon exploring this vibrant city, soaking in the colourful displays of tradition and culture. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Museo de Santo Domingo, a treasure trove of Oaxacan history and art.
Our day begins with a visit to the Maguey fields and a traditional mezcal factory, where ancestral traditions are meticulously preserved. Delight in the flavours of authentic Oaxacan cuisine!
After lunch, we set off for Oaxaca’s Pacific coast. Upon arrival at La Ventanilla Beach, we’ll be greeted by the mesmerizing hues of the sunset. If the timing aligns with nature’s rhythm, we’ll have the chance to witness a remarkable event: a turtle liberation.
As we soak in the sights and sounds of Oaxaca’s Coast, be mindful of the soaring temperatures, reaching up to 35ºC, and the probability of mosquitoes in the evening.
Embark on an ecological adventure as we delve into the wonders of the mangrove ecosystem with Lagarto Real Cooperative. Glide serenely through tranquil waters on a boat tour, immersing ourselves in the lush flora while keeping watch for sightings of crocodiles, turtles, iguanas, and a plethora of bird species.
After our mangrove exploration, we journey to San Agustin, a pristine beach nestled within Huatulco National Park. Here, we’ll indulge in two nights of camping amidst some of Mexico’s most stunning coastal scenery.
Prepare for a day of coastal delight as we embark on a full-day boat tour exploring the pristine bays of Huatulco. With its shimmering waters, secluded coves, and breathtaking landscapes, Huatulco is a paradise waiting to be discovered.
Today, we embark on a full day of driving as we make our way to the charming city of Chiapa de Corzo. Nestled in the western part of Chiapas, this picturesque city sits proudly in the shadow of the awe-inspiring Sumidero Canyon.
Upon arrival in Chiapa de Corzo, you’ll have the afternoon to explore the city’s unique charm and local attractions.
Today promises an adventure through the natural marvel of El Sumidero Canyon, ranked among Mexico’s Top 10 Natural Wonders. As we cruise along the canyon, marvel at the towering walls reaching over 1,000 feet high, while keeping an eye out for the diverse array of endangered species that call this area home.
After our canyon exploration and a satisfying lunch, we will continue our journey to the enchanting town of San Cristóbal de las Casas. San Cristóbal is a place where ancient traditions harmonize with a bohemian vibe. We’ll spend two memorable days exploring the myriad attractions, ensuring you experience the best that San Cristóbal has to offer. Today, immerse yourself in the eclectic ambience of San Cristóbal de las Casas, where ancient traditions merge seamlessly with a bohemian, hippie atmosphere. This colonial gem enchants its quaint neighbourhoods, cobblestone streets, and bustling markets. We’ll guide you through the highlights of this enchanting town, strolling along pedestrian streets, visiting churches, exploring markets, and delving into museums showcasing folk costumes, and more.
In the afternoon, feel free to continue your exploration at your own pace. Wander through the downtown area, indulge in local cuisine at charming restaurants, or experience the lively nightlife at vibrant bars.
Today, immerse yourself in the vibrant traditions of the nearby Mayan villages surrounding San Cristóbal. Our first stop is San Juan Chamula, where ancient rituals intertwine with modern Christianity, offering a fascinating glimpse into indigenous culture. We’ll then continue to visit Mujeres Sembrando La Vida, a cooperative that hosts a Tsotsil learning centre, providing insight into local traditions and community projects.
Returning to San Cristóbal, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the town’s museums, including exhibits on Mayan medicine, orchids, folk costumes, and more. Alternatively, opt for a Temascal, a traditional indigenous ritual involving a steam bath.
Today’s journey to Palenque offers a blend of exploration and serendipity. Depending on road conditions, we may take different routes and have the chance to visit some stunning waterfalls along the way, provided the water is crystal blue—a spectacle influenced by recent rainfall.
Upon arrival at Palenque National Park, we’ll settle into our campsite at Cabañas Kin Balam. With the evening free, take the opportunity to unwind and relax at the bar or by the pool, soaking in the tranquil surroundings. In the evening, we will enjoy a bonfire under the stars!
Our second day in Palenque promises an enriching experience as we embark on a guided visit to the Archeological Site. Nestled deep within the jungle, Palenque is one of Mexico’s most impressive archaeological wonders. Marvel at the exquisite Mayan architecture, intricate sculptures, and captivating bas-relief carvings that adorn the site.
After the guided tour, take advantage of the opportunity to explore the surrounding jungle on a scenic hike back from the ruins. Or opt for a Temascal, a traditional indigenous ritual involving a steam bath.
Today, our journey leads us to Calakmul, a destination brimming with ancient mysteries and natural wonders. But first, we embark on a memorable detour to Cenote Miguel Colorado for a unique experience. Nestled amidst the jungle, this open cenote offers a refreshing respite and a chance to encounter exotic wildlife, including the elusive spider monkeys.
Upon arrival in the quaint village of Conhuas, our gateway to the Calakmul excursion, we settle into the rustic cabins of Cabañas Calakmul, our home for the night.
Today, we’ll embark on an expedition to either the Calakmul or Becan Archeological Site, depending on the opening schedules affected by nearby railway construction. Both sites are nestled within one of Mexico’s largest reserves, boasting diverse flora and fauna. These remote sites offer a rare opportunity for tourists to climb their ancient pyramids. As we wander through the ruins, keep an eye out for exotic wildlife, including woodpeckers and echoing howler monkeys.
In the afternoon, we’ll venture to a bat sinkhole and witness millions of bats emerge from the cave at sunset.
Today beckons a leisurely afternoon at the enchanting Xul-ha Lagoon, a tranquil oasis fed by underground cenotes. As we make our way to Bacalar town, this stunning lagoon invites us to unwind with opportunities for swimming and kayaking.
Upon reaching Bacalar, a picturesque village nestled along the shores of a pristine lagoon, we’ll acquaint ourselves with the main square and uncover the best of this beautiful town.
Today invites you to bask in the natural splendour of Bacalar as we embark on a captivating sailing expedition. Set against the backdrop of this pristine lagoon, fed by underground cenotes, our journey promises moments of tranquillity and awe.
In the afternoon, indulge in relaxation at our hotel pier, soaking in the serene ambience, or venture to the historic centre for a glimpse into Bacalar’s storied past. Explore the ancient Spanish fort or delve into tales of swashbuckling adventures at the pirate museum.
Today promises an enriching journey into the heart of Mayan traditions and natural beauty. Our day begins with a captivating demonstration of Yucatec Mayan traditions by the Xyaat cooperative, where we’ll learn about the fascinating practices of Mayan beekeeping and indulge in a traditional lunch, prepared with care and authenticity.
Next, we’ll embark on an exploration of the extraordinary Samulá Cenote, hailed as one of the crown jewels of the Yucatan Peninsula. Prepare to be mesmerized by the ethereal beauty of this underground wonder.
As the afternoon unfolds, we’ll make our way to Pisté, the nearest village to the iconic Chichen Itzá Site, where we’ll settle into the comforts of our hotel.
Our day begins with a journey to the legendary Chichén Itzá Archeological Site. Marvel at the awe-inspiring Kukulcan Pyramid, one of the seven wonders of the world, as we delve into the mysteries of this ancient city. Following our exploration, we’ll be welcomed by the Yucatec Mayans of the Aldea Maya Viva cooperative. Immerse yourself in their traditions as you witness the art of hammock weaving.
Next, we’ll journey to the coastal haven of Puerto Morelos. Spend the afternoon unwinding amidst the tranquil beauty of the beach. As the evening descends, join us for a memorable group dinner.
As our journey together draws to a close, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for joining us on this unforgettable adventure. Please note that accommodation for tonight is not included in the tour package. However, feel free to reach out to us for further information or assistance with post-accommodation. Puerto Morelos offers a perfect setting for relaxation and exploration.

This is an amazing tour! It was our first time in Mexico and it didn’t disappoint – in fact it totally exceeded our expectations. The diversity throughout was incredible – art, culture and great cuisine in Mexico City, multiple Mayan historical sites – each different and each spectacular, backed-up by some great guides, fantastic cenotes, beach and jungle experiences and lovely wildlife.
However, it was the inspiration and enthusiasm of our lovely leader, Jaime, that made the trip. He put together a superb itinerary with at least one exceptional highlight every day and his friendliness, charm and overall joie de vivre is infectious.
Add to this a great and safe driver in Cesar and the overall three-week experience is life-enhancing and not to be missed.
Overlanding is an acquired taste and this encapsulates everything that is good about it.

I just completed Lupita Overland Spring 2023 Mexico City to Tulum 21 day tour (South Mexico Wonders), led by Jaime Gonzalez. We did all of that and more. The trip was fabulous. It met all of my expectations.
Traveling with Jaime was effortless. He took care of all the details.
I was surprised to discover how few people along our route spoke English.
When I booked the trip, I was unaware how much this would matter.
It was wonderful it was to have a native speaker to help organize our travels.

During my whole career as a tour leader, I’ve guided many overland tours around the globe… I knew Mexico had loads of potential, in fact, I planned this itinerary… but the route exceeded my expectations!
Every day we met amazing people, visited great attractions and drove through beautiful landscapes. Oaxaca, Chiapas and the Yucatan peninsula are by far my favourite areas of Mexico, my favourite country.
Lupita the van responded perfectly, and our main driver Cesar drove safely the whole time. Travelling in a van and in a small group allowed us to visit places that wouldn’t have been possible in a larger vehicle or with a bigger group… It’s been such an honour to lead a great group of experienced travellers through the real Mexico!
