Important Departure Info
San Cristóbal is a place where ancient customs coexist with a bohemian atmosphere. This colonial city offers eleven beautiful neighbourhoods with cobbled streets and bustling markets. This afternoon we have a meeting to explain everything about our next adventure. After that, we go out for our first group dinner. Get ready to taste your first local delicacies!
San Cristóbal contains many interesting attractions. We recommend arriving a few days earlier to enjoy this wonderful city. Contact us if you want to book pre-accommodation.
* Please note we arrive today with the rest of the group around 3 pm. The tour officially begins at 6 pm with the Pre-departure meeting. Upon arrival, hotel receptionists will assist you at the checking by showing your ID.
Today we explore exciting traditions around San Cristóbal’s nearby Mayan villages. San Juan Chamula boasts a penchant for ancient rituals blended with modern Christianity. Additionally, we will visit the markets and churches at Zinacantán. Finally, we will visit Mujeres Sembrando la Vida, a cooperative that also runs a Tsotsil learning centre.
Arriving back in San Cristóbal, you can visit the museums and enjoy this magnificent town. If you like going out, don’t miss the opportunity!
Today we will visit Agua Azul waterfalls on our way to Palenque. Please note we will only visit them if the water is blue. This depends on the rain during the previous days. Otherwise, we will leave later from San Cristóbal.
After lunch, we drive to Palenque National Park. Arriving at our campsite, the afternoon is free to relax at the pool!
On our second day at Palenque, we will have a guided visit to the Archeological Site. Palenque may be Mexico’s most impressive archaeological wonder deep into the jungle. Palenque ruins date from ca. 226 BC to ca. AD 799. The site contains some of the finest Mayan architecture, sculpture and bas-relief carvings. The surroundings teem with exotic wildlife, including panthers, parrots and howler monkeys. The best way to explore this jungle is to hike back from the ruins to our campsite after the visit.
The jungle of southern Mexico contains a system of underground rivers that connects over 30,000 Km of natural sinkholes. Once revered by the ancient Mayans, they are now magnets for explorers. On our way to the Calakmul Reserve, we will do a lunch stop at Miguel Colorado’s open cenote. We then arrive at our Cabins in the little village of Conhuas, the door to the Calakmul excursion.
Today is one of the most interesting days of our tour! We wake up very early and drive 60 Km through the deep jungle to Calakmul Archeological Site. On our way, we will enjoy a guided hike through the jungle in search of wildlife. Calakmul is one of the largest reserves in Mexico, counting many species of flora and fauna.
Calakmul was one of the largest and most powerful ancient cities uncovered in the Maya lands. Its great pyramid is one of the tallest of the Maya pyramids. Visiting the remains is a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience. It is one of the few places where you can climb the pyramids!
In the afternoon, we will visit a bat sinkhole and admire millions of bats leaving the cave for sunset!
Please note you’ll need to walk 15 min to arrive at the site. The steps at the pyramids are tall, but you can always choose not to climb.
Today we camp at Xul-ha Lagoon, fed by underground cenotes. This stunning lagoon offers an ideal space for swimming and sailing. The lengthy, narrow lake forms no less than seven different shades of blue.
Our campsite is very beautiful, and we’ll most likely be the only guests. Please note toilets are good but there is only 2 of them (one for man, one for women).
Today we enjoy a marvellous sailing tour around Xul Ha Lagoon. In the afternoon, we will visit Bacalar Rapids. Let the current carry you along as you soak in the beauty of the lagoon!
Today, the Yucatec Mayans from the Xyaat cooperative will show us some of their traditions and delight us with a traditional lunch.
Then, we will explore the amazing Dzitnup Cenote. In our opinion, it is the best cenote in all of the Yucatan Peninsula. Finally, arriving in the afternoon, we will head to Pisté, the closest village to Chichen Itzá Site.
Today we explore the world-famous Chichen Itza Site. We will enter the site as soon as it’s open. This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the largest ancient cities. Throughout the site, the Kukulcan Pyramid, one of the world’s seven wonders, stands out.
After the visit, we will have lunch at one of the traditional Yucatec food restaurants. And then we will drive to Cancun town, arriving in time for our last group dinner!
Please note we stay in Cancun Town. This area is 15 min drive / 30 min bike ride from the beach. The downtown area of Cancun will give you many choices of restaurants and bars. You will notice a more relaxed atmosphere. And avoid the super expensive prices of the hotel/beach area.
Today is the last day of the tour. If you have enough time before your flight leaves, you’ll be able to keep exploring Cancun. Please note there is no accommodation included on the trip tonight.
The main purpose of ending the tour in Cancún town is to provide you with a good base for your extra stay in other destinations and/or facilitate your airport transfer. Private transportation in the Riviera Maya is very expensive… so we specifically chose our hotel because it is located just in front of the public bus station!
We would like to thank you for joining us on this incredible adventure… WAIT FOR YOU BACK, HAPPY TRAILS AMIG@S!
