Coast, Islands and Marine Life

Home > Get inspired! > Outdoor Activities > Coast, Islands and Marine Life

Mesoamerica’s coast contains some of the world’s most important marine life reserves. Starting from north to south, you can explore the stunning bays of Baja California. Here, most whales in the world gather each year to reproduce. At the central areas, the Pacific coast is home to a splendorous turtle season. Finishing in Riviera Maya and Belize, you will be able to snorkel at the second Earth’s coral reef barrier. All marine life lovers are welcome!

Whale shark at Baja California Sur
Whales, Sea-Lions, Sharks and Turtles at Baja California

The stunning Baja peninsula (the world’s second-largest) is a must-visit for those in search of wildlife-spotting experiences. Containing dozens of warm bays protected by UNESCO, it is the perfect paradise for marine life. You won’t know where to look first!

Through our adventures, we focus on different activities. First, we will explore Espíritu Santo Island, nearby the city of La Paz. With few predators, the sea lion colony is one of the most playful in the world. In addition, the whale sharks reach up to 12m in length and swim gracefully alongside every visitor. Heading west, we will join a turtle liberation program as event participants, helping the Tortugueros las Playitas organization to balance the fragile ecosystem of Baja California.

The last stop –Whale Season at San Ignacio Lagoon- is normally the most expected. From December to April, almost the entire whale population migrate to Baja California to reproduce, creating the ocean’s biggest concentration of these majestic animals and a great chance to see the baby whales!

Lupita Overland: Turtle, Belize Coral Reefs
Snorkel at Caye Caulker island and the Garifuna culture at Hopkins

Belize‘s Caribbean coast is the perfect example of a tropical paradise, and we have selected the two best spots to explore while on our adventures.

Caye Caulker is a small island ideal to disconnect while dancing to reggae music. We will explore the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere through a snorkel tour. Being one of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, this reef features species of over 100 coral, 500 tropical fish, and hundreds of invertebrates. Among others, it will be possible to spot sea turtles, nurse sharks and manatees.

Pelicans at Riviera Nayarit
Riviera Nayarit and Islas Marietas National Park

The Riviera Nayarit’s sweeping swath of coast attracts nature lovers and surfers. There’s plenty to see here in towns like charming Sayulita and idyllic San Pancho (San Francisco).

In terms of pristine natural beauty and scenic vistas, few areas in the world are richer than the Marietas Islands. Protected as part of a National Park, these natural wonders contain numerous wildlife species, as well as some of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Mexico. Additionally, the islands are home to the famous ‘hidden beach’ – a sun-drenched opening only accessible through a watery tunnel.

Baby Turtles at Todos Santos Turtle Conservation Centre
La Ventanilla mangrove, Mazunte’s Turtle Conservation centre and Punta Cometa

Oaxaca’s Pacific coast boasts sandy beaches and crashing turquoise waves. A truly remote spot to relax around is the mangrove of La Ventanilla Community, whose inhabitants are organized into a cooperative that preserves the biodiversity.

As part of our experiences, we enjoy a tour through the mangrove and learn about some preservation activities for alligators and deers. Additionally, we spend one afternoon at the nearby village of Mazunte, visiting a turtle conservation centre, relaxing at its idyllic coast and doing a short hike to spot the sunset at the viewpoint of Punta Cometa.
